At first I thought maybe it's a cockerel and it's trying to crow, but watching it closer it seems to have problems breathing. It Tilts it's head back a bit with it's mouth wide open, almost looks as if it's nose is clogged, sounds like it too. When it inhales it makes a weird sound, and then it sticks it's tongue out at exhale. she has been sneezing. There is no bubbles in her nose, no sick looking eyes. She acts very slow, she drank a little water, no bugs on her. She'll run fast when i try to pick her up. She also acts like her mouth is dry (probably from being a mouth breather). Please help!

All i can share is my experience. I had a young 3 day or so old chick. She had the same open mouth breathing, dropped wings, and a bubble popping sound in her chest. I couldnt find Tylan or any of the meds suggested, but I did get VetRx. I would NOT recommend VetRX for young chicks. It made my chick's breathing more labored.

What I ended up doing was carrying her with me all day, feeding her and watering her by hand everytime she woke up.

I gave her sugar and Durastat in her water which has vitamin c, oregano, and cinnamon (I had read that others had great success with vitamin c and respiratory issues). I also tried colloidal silver (as much as she'd take which was about 5 to 10 droplets). I'm not sure what helped (or if anything helped at all), but she was noticeably better by the 3rd or 4th day.

I did separate her the first day of her labored breathing, but from what I read it was pretty pointless because if it was a viral respiratory infection all my birds had it already or will have it soon (btw, no one else was ever sick). And I noticed that when I separated her from the rest she did worse, so I ended up just letting her stay with them at night.

She is now a whiny, but healthy and independent Welsummer who is all set to lay her first egg very shortly.

Don't give up.

Thanks so much for the information. I'm going to try some antibiotics. I don't hear anything in hear chest when I put my ear up to her back. Just a soft sigh when she exhales. She also sneezes

If I could've found the antibiotics I definitely would've used them. Glad to hear that you have them! It sounds like your chick is in good hands. Best of luck!

Does anyone know if tetracycline is good? She's not that bad off I don't think. Just very inactive and doing the open mouth thing

Well I tried to find the antibiotics at our co-op, but the local vet decided that no one ( Besides themselves) could sell such medicine and took it away :barnie. I can't afford the local vet!:hit
Update: She is not gasping for air anymore! She's active and eating! Even talking some! I put her back with her family and they started picking on her, but I guess to re-establish pecking order? I did read somewhere that heat could cause such activity, and it has been really hot lately! Could this be the case? I hope it is!:fl
She decided to take a nap before I left the coop, so I'm still on high alert.

Oh yeah. The heat probably got to her. I'd also lean towards that since you didn't hear any rattling or bubbly sounds in her chest. Either way she sounds like she's going to be fine. Glad to hear she's feeling better!
