young hen with damaged eye

It never ceases to amaze me--I just came to this forum to look for info. about the very same issue! and here it is, right near the top!

I went to see my flock at lunchtime today, and my faverolle--the lowest in the pecking order--had a right eye that was obviously irritated (red and closed most of the time.)
I'm 99% sure it's due to a pecking injury. There's no oozing or secretions and lately my wyandotte has been "helping" her out by plucking her beard and muff feathers...and she just sits and allows it, as though she enjoys it! She's also a constant target of my little banty EE, who is VERY possessive of any food she finds.
Poor thing! It's one thing after another with her!

i would separtaet her just until she gets better

But be aware that even a few days of separation can lead to changes in the pecking order, and you may find that she loses her position and has to prove herself all over again...
You would be well-advised to reintroduce her to the flock at night, after they've been roosting for a few hours.

very true

Rather than use Neosporin, which I'm a little leery about applying near the eye, as it's petroleum-based, I'm going to run and get some Terramycin opthalmic ointment (available at feed stores and probably pet stores). I found another thread that discusses it as the best oinment to apply to a damaged eye.

rinsed out her eye with saline a few times then blotted very gently with a paper towel. did not see any worms, saw a few clear bubble right next to the corner of her eye. the eye itself is dull and deflated looking. put some neo on it till i can get some terramycin, the local feedstore here has none. truth other then her eye she looks great. up and digging and hunting for bugs. ate some bread, ate an egg i made her, ate some layena.

Continue with the neosporin like I mentioned previously, then get back with us and let us know if there's improvement or not. I recommend that you be prepared to buy some tylan 50 injectable, you might need it.

i can get some tylan 50 from the feed store if they have it. should i give a dose for prevention? and if so where should i inject it? thanks for your time
