Young quail has been scalped and eye is badly damaged. Wound smells bad.

How much does it need to drink? I can get it to drink a mouthful if I gently dip its beak or put a drop on its beak.
I'm not very comfortable cleaning the wound without more instruction. I am fine around blood and things but I'm just not sure how o go about cleaning it.

I would recommend using a cottonball with iodine (or peroxide if no other wound cleaner is available) to gently dab at the wound. if you use peroxide it will bubble a lot, that means it is working.

I had this happen to one of my males also. The sight of it is terrifying. First thing, identify the perpetrator. Second, isolate the injured quail. I didn’t know what to do either. I considered putting it down so it wouldn’t suffer, it decided to wait and see. I did nothing except separate it from the rest and let nature take its course. Eventually to my surprise, it completely healed.
Now. I’m not saying this is what you should do for sure, but it’s what I did.
After everything is said and done you will need to decide what you want to do with the overly aggressive male. Some say cull...

Yes, There probably is . I assume the injured one is separated, if not i would do that right away.

I have peroxide and something called povidone iodine 10% will that work? Which one of those is better? Also It doesn't like to be held. Could that be a problem when cleaning the wound?

Yes the hurt one is separated. Should I separate the other two so this doesn't happen again? Or will they be fine.

No experience with that kid of iodine but from some research it was made to clean skin so i would reccommend using peroxide,even though it should not be used multiple times. as for it being flighty i would wrap it in a towel to keep it still.

You just need to squirt it with some iodine or sterile saline and let that dry... I wouldn't rub it or touch it unless it's to put some triple antibiotic ointment on it. You want to wash your hands with antibacterial soap before you put the ointment on... you can also use sterile gloves but I know that a lot of people don't have these on hand. I always have them on hand for dog wounds, cat wounds, or chicken wounds.

I wouldn't use peroxide on a wound that's deep like this, but that just me... I'd Peroxide is all you have on hand them use it one time. Peroxide is just for small cuts and scrapes. Peroxide should not be using very often because it kills the good bacteria along with a bad bacteria.

iodine is one of the most common wound cleaners that they use in the hospital and it is used in every single surgery that they do unless the patient is allergic to it.
