Hello all,
I have a flock of 7 hens, and a young rooster (around 11 weeks old). The hens arrived after the rooster, and they seemed to be fine for about a week. This morning though, when we let them out of the coop, the poor roo had a big patch of skin on the back of his neck pecked off down to the muscle. I have isolated him in a dog crate, with food and water, and treated the wound with Blu-Kote. What is the best way to proceed from here? How do I reintroduce him to the flock eventually, or can I?

Thank you for your help!

He might have been attacked by the hens, but don't rule out the possibility of a hawk or raccoon attack. BluKote is more for a scrape, so I would use Vetericyn wound spray, or clean it with betadine or saline, and then use some antibiotic ointment such as plain neosporin until the skin starts to heal. Then Blukote may be handy to hide the bare skin. A dog crate placed next to where the hens are hanging out, with food and his own water, would be a food way to keep them familiar while he is healing.
