Your 2024 Garden

It rained last night! :ya That will help with today's chores.

I have a small shallow bird bath visible from a window. Night before last something turned it over. That's never happened before as it is fairly heavy. I forgot to fix it yesterday. I use it for a rain gage. I wonder what flipped it on it's side? Hopefully just someone's dog.

I may cultivate with the tiller between the rows of beans and summer peas. Then I may wait until tomorrow for some cooler air to move in tomorrow. The rains we got stirred up some weed growth. Expecting to harvest some more early corn by the end the coming week. I see one tomato starting to turn now. Need to buy some good back now. We used some of our new crop onions for lunch and they are strong. Must have a lot of sulfur in the soil here.

So far, the garden is going mostly good.
I have very invasive Perslane that is trying to choke out my other plants. (Carrots, beet's, peas, etc)

It's been pretty dry here, but I planted pretty dense on my brassicas, so they are actually doing quite well. The cabbage is starting to make baby heads, which is a huge accomplishment for me, considering I couldn't get my cabbage to grow at all last year. :)

Already getting quite a few harvests as well. I've gotten peas, lettuce, cilantro, radish's, kale, spinach and choy.

Our forecast that looked like some rain our way Tuesday has found somewhere else to go. I'll start watering my sweet potatoes eggplant, peppers, and sweet corn Saturday night. Blackberries and blueberries early Sunday morning. Then unless it is an 95% or better chance for Wednesday the other corn, beans, summer peas, and tomatoes get watered on Monday. Just enough to keep them alive and growing. 90+ degree days take the moisture out of our sandy loam rather quickly. I sure miss the days of big heavy wire tied bales of wheat straw to mulch everything down with. If I'm able to plant next year paper mulch that comes on big long rolls like news print will be my mulch to cover the ground with to block weeds and save moisture.

We had some opportunities for rain, but all have missed us. I'm watering both gardens today.
We did get rain, not sure how much. I heard the roar of a sudden downpour, twice. Neither lasted very long but everything perked up.

My side garden is taking off...look at the purslane! I love the orange and yellow stripes. The marigolds and bidens are filling out, too.

The portulaca is spreading as well. Only the plants against the house are perennials, the others will die with the first good frost.

It's hot today, 90° and humid, so I haven't harvested my first bush beans yet, will do a little later.

Since I am taking the cockerels to the auction tomorrow I did most of my Saturday morning errands this morning. I bought 12 concrete blocks to make steps for the "new" shed. They sat outside for about three hours, then I just HAD to finish the job.

The blocks are slight staggered, and feel solid. If they shift once the grass underneath decomposes I'll make adjustments.

Speaking of the auction...I have taken cockerels to this auction house twice before, but when I realize the boys are leaving, for good, I get a little funny feeling in my stomach. I'll take my baskets out to the coop once it gets dark, then put two in each basket and clamp the netting on tightly. That allows me to fasten the open side of the netting to the basket with string.

I'm going to miss the little delinquents.

I've been watching a flock of grow out birds wander over into the garden. They don't touch a thing in the beans or summer peas but the do like to make dust bathes in the shade of the tomatoes. No damage to anything yet. Hope they are eating bugs while they roam around in there. I'm still not seeing anymore damage or horn worms. This is not the norm.
