Your 2024 Garden

Yesterday it was supposed to be dry, it rained.

Today it was supposed to rain...and since it didn't, I headed out to the yard.

The corner of the house where a downspout is going to be installed was very overgrown. I tackled it with hedge clippers and loppers.

Then I placed a rain barrel underneath the opening in the gutter.

It looks SO much better.

Next I decided to top off a couple more raised beds, to prepare for when my seeds arrive.

This had bush beans, soil level is low.

I dug fully rotted compost from my leaf/yard clippings pile.

Pretty, hmm?

Three loads later...

One down. Next is the cantaloupe bed.

I had already dug under mower clippings, it took one cart of compost.

This is where I removed the finished compost. When I got about 6" down I hit clay and stopped. I do not want to add clay to my raised beds.

As I was sitting and taking a breather the mail truck arrived, with my seeds!
:celebrate

The first bed was for more peas. I planted a row on each side:

Then I planted some purple-top turnips in the middle.

And added a trellis:

The peas I just planted are supposed to grow taller than the other variety, glad I hadn't used the taller trellis yet.

Now I'm resting, whew.

ETA my seeds:

Have you ever just had a failure year in the garden? That was 2024 for me. I still got some produce, but not nearly as much as usual. I got behind on planting and weeding during my 2-week vacation in June, had a really busy summer, and never truly caught up.

The highlight of my garden this year was probably my first-ever harvest of garlic, which yielded me 20 nice heads of garlic. But besides that I feel a bit ashamed to even call myself a gardener with how many weeds are in my garden right now. Has anyone else had a year that went this way? I think I'm just venting here lol.

Vent away. We've all had failures of one kind and another. For me, it was greens and beans. If they didn't have such short season, it would have been zilch for me for both.
Thanks.

Yeah, I guess each year I do better or worse with different crops. But usually tomatoes and peppers are always a success for me. This year, not even those were that abundant.

I think maybe I need to simplify and focus on just a few things, instead of trying to do it all. Maybe I would have done better if I didn't plant so many different things.

I've been gardening most of my life. It was not a good year for me except with root crops. And collards.
