In the 70's I grew a lot of tomatoes for small town marketing. I grew them on low ridges so that if it rained a lot they weren't as apt to split. Tomatoes like to be watered from the ground so they don't get the plant's leaves wet. The large commercial fields in FL are flood watered down the middles.

Any Sungold tomatoes that crack I simply eat on the spot, I eat about half the harvest while watering the plants lol.

Yup! I eat the cracked ones too.

Has anyone dried cherry tomatoes? I did some and they were... ok. I think if I had better (sweeter, tastier) tomatoes to begin with, the would have been better. The ones I made didn't taste that great.

I dried cherry toms last year. I like them, I throw them in soups and stews. I also fermented cherry tomatoes with garlic and basil. Holy crap, that was so good!

I've got today and most of the day tomorrow to get stuff done ahead the the next round of rains. I guess the focus today should be to get the area where the carrots and beets are going in tilled one more time to bring any green bits of sod to the top to dry out so it will not sprout after I plant. If my bones and muscles hold up just a little while longer I'll be able to set the cruise control for cultivating a little every day at a much slower speed. I am so ready for home grown food.

It looks like I'm going to get a lot done before the rain hits tomorrow. All the onions are planted and I got a site prepped for the first of the tomatoes and eggplant. Carrot and Beet Ground is ready to plant with the one row seeder we have. I will have time to go over the corn patch with the tiller again killing more of the sod that was tilled up. Hopefully get enough sweet corn planted to get some on the way. I anxious to pick the first roasting ears. I need to decide where the canning tomatoes will be planted and get that ready next.

What kind of tomatoes do you grow for canning?

Some Romas and we will use some from the celebrities to make sure we have enough. We have never had a good crop volume wise of Romas. Maybe this year will be better. If I find the seed on a Burpee seed rack for their Super Sauce I will get some and see what I can make from them.
