Your 2024 Garden

I share your feeling. I'll go check my trap in a couple hours.
Good luck!
The only thing I've had squirrels destroy i the veg garden is sunflowers. They will shimmy up the stalk and bite the tops off. Then go running across the yard with the bloom.

Funny part was seeing hubby running behind them saying choice words! :wee:duc

Oh, my. We have LOTS of squirrels this year too! All the colors: red, grey, and black. Black squirrels used to be very rare out here, but plentiful closer to Lake Michigan. Maybe they can't afford the rent closer to the lake anymore?:idunno

I remember those roasting size red squirrels from Michigan. They dwarf the size of the countless gray squirrels we have here in AL. At least we have countless oak trees here that keep them fat.

I'm thawing out some ribs to grill tomorrow to go along with a rack of jalapeno peppers stuffed with cheese and maybe they will have a little bit of sausage mixed in with the cheese...They sure do need picking and I best be getting my old bones out there and doing it before the water they got last night makes them out grow my rack and they have to be used for chili. It's a might bit hot for chili right now even if there is one pobalano pepper that is ready to pick too. It will not be long before we are grilling slabs of eggplant too.

It's been a long time since I grilled sweet corn but just maybe I can figure out how and put a few on the grill tomorrow to roast.
I always husk my corn, wash it, put a pat of butter on top and wrap it in foil to roast it

First crop of peas are starting to bloom, and one planter of potatoes is getting the leaves munched badly. 😖 I put some DE down before the weekend but there was enough rain I’m not sure it helped. 🤔 I might put some more down tonight.

I think that's how we have always done it. I think I've tried pulling the husks back enough to add some water with salt and pepper in it along with a pat of butter and doing in the husks. Just don't remember it being very good done in the husks. We will have some worms I know to cut out as I didn't get it dusted with sevin when I should have. I used to just use a puff of sevin on the new silks as they came out and that was enough to prevent the worms from destroying on average I'd guess 1/4 of most of the ears. Not many escaped the bug that laid the eggs on the silks. I had hoped the thousands of acres of GMO corn around me would control the breeding of the bugs but that didn't help us at all. I must be vigilant when the main crop patch starts silking to stay after it. I usually dust it just before dark when beneficial insects are gone to bed.

We are getting far more rain that forecast. I was out in it and dared it to rain hard on me. It must have worked. One major cloud in the sky right over us and in a holding pattern pouring rain down. I'm leaving the sprinkler run so it will keep on raining a little while longer.

This was my problem last year. Almost the whole crop was ruined. I decided to not plant corn this year, I'll just get what I want from farmer's markets, there's a lot around so no biggie
