Sand and thick sand works better. Straw rots quickly.

I have aviary netting on the way to me. I think I will pitch it and attach all the way around. This will at least add some protection from owls or hawks.

Just sharing a link to the carolina waterfowl rescue site - they have great info on how to provide housing to keep your babies safe. It's an ongoing project for me too - i'm now trying to bear proof my housing LOL.

BEAR PROOF?!?! Wow!! I’m in a downtown neighborhood so possums, owls, and cats are my most likely issues. I have it easy comparatively!

@awifey : I mean this with all good intentions. The security of your duck coop is paramount! Please take this from someone who has suffered the heartbreak of losing an entire flock to predators, and had only carnage left to clean up. It was a horrible, bloody scene, and I would NOT wish it on any person. Truly.

I agree it needs to be more secure, hardware cloth around & on top of the pen & paving stones or something secure to keep predators from digging underneath. I've also learned the hard way with losing my 2 ducks to a raccoon
