Zane and Shadow...Roommates? (Cute Pic, post #79)

When this messy weather is over, I may try again to acclimate Zane and Shadow to each other. There is just too much going on and we are in survival mode, meaning no extra hassles, right now.

hang in there Cynthia. It will get worse, weather-wise, before it gets better. Unbelievably cold here last night and this morning it is up to 1' and headed your way. Stay warm and safe.

I am thinking of them all and hope they heal up. Does Lexi seem to enjoy her oil massages? I just think that doing that has to make her feel better and relieve some of the pain she feels. I sure hope so, the old gal deserves it. She has left a wonderful Legacy for sure.

Add in my prayers and good thoughts for Lexi and Olivia too Cyn!

I fully understand the "hunker down survival mode" when it comes to our girls. Someday, when you have more time, remind me to send you pictures of the winter of 08-09. *shudder* When we got well over 5 feet of snow in the space of just 3 short weeks!

As well as temps down around the OMG that's too cold mark! (-5 most nights)

It's been real cold here too for the last few days. Daytime high around 25 and nights down to about 10 or so...not as bad as we've ever seen it, but certainly enough to get our own "survival mode" in high gear!

And because it's been sooooo c-c-c-c-c-cold!, I've started giving the girls a mash of heated up whole kernel corn mixed into warm oatmeal. That is the first time I've ever done that. I had no idea how the girls were going to take to it.....

I needn't have worried my ugly little head over it....They freaking DEVOURED it!

Yup! The raptors in them came out in full force over that! I don't know which they enjoyed more...the change in food offering, or the fact that it was nice and warm!

Either way, a respectable sized bowl of it was gone in about a minute and a half!

They have you wonderful ladies to thank for this! (Cyn & Cetawin mostly) Were it not for your inspirational posts and pictures of the goodies you offer your chickens, I might not have ever thought to try it on my girls. Next week....YOGURT!!!

Thanks for the great ideas on how to warm up chilled chickens on wickedly cold days!

If it is their first experience with yogurt I strongly urge you to wear a raincoat and protective eyewear...a shower cap would be good too!

They can sling yogurt like a monkey can throw poo. Mine got it once...never again. They get other stuff but no yogurt treats here. hahahaha

I can't give oatmeal because it wets the roosters' wattles and they'll freeze out there are three degrees. Yep, it's 3. And a layer of crunchy, dangerous snow. May bring arthritic Lexie and tiny Shadow in the house to warm up and have some, though.

Mine love the yogurt so much..........it looks like they licked the bowl!! Still cold here Cyn, but I think next week will make this one look like a bad dream. Stay warm and take it one day at a time to get them all through this

It was 3 degrees this morning. We brought Shadow and Lexie into the house to eat some warm oatmeal and give Lexie a baby aspirin for her poor feet. After Shadow finished eating, this is what happened. She was extremely well-behaved. Might have to get some more just like her, maybe a pint-sized hubby.

She didn't even poop. Good girl!

I am so glad shadow is such a good pretty girl! Both your husband and shadow look very comfortable infront of that fire now I feel like making one.
