Zane Made REAL Progress (New Pics Pg 99)!RIP Lorelei...

Zane - healing can be such a slowwwwwwwwww thing - hopefully he get sstronger in time. If his appetite is good and he is interested in the world around him then he is likely not in bad pain. How to prevent atrophy without overstraining during healing is that delicate difficult balance. Where are the chicken physical therapists of the world when we need them?!!!

I am glad Ruby and Rosemary are improving - it's just the funniest darn thing when they give you a run for your money, as Ruby did (such a good sign!). Whenever Betty used to steal a whole grape from me before I had a chance to cut it up - as Annie also does now - Betty then and Annie now runs like he77 grape in beak, knowing I didn't want them to do that. It cracks me up every time. They knew/know that it cracks mne up and I think it eggs them on (pun not intended!).

I think you probably did the right thing for Violet. When I brought deceased Betty home from the vets I wasn't sure whether I should show her to BJ because he was heartbroken enough as it was that she was "missing" - but then I did - perhaps too briefly - and she was mostly wrapped up.

Looking forward to the day when Zane crows again.

Henry, good luck with biology! Let me know how that comes out, pal.
Carrie, Zane hears roosters crowing all around us. There are so many people with chickens here, mostly game roos, but also a close neighbor with Buff Orps and some newer crows I recently started hearing, plus someone even has peafowl I just heard a couple weeks ago. I need this stupid weather to dry up so Zane can get outside. If it doesn't, I'll be dealing with a huge cocci outbreak with my six week old chicks in the nursery pen, like I need something else to battle right now!

Judy, I thought that was a great sign that Ruby was acting like her old cantankerous self yesterday! I was sure we'd lost her for a day or two there. Whew!

Oh yeah, the rain is HORRIBLE for Cocci. We had a week of it and BAM the meat birds had it again. AAAAHHHH

That's 3 times, and this is dry Colorado. Next time they are getting the vaccination.

I live in holland where it is wet wet wet most of the time (which is why my floors are raised and underneath paved ) .
@LoneCowboy...vaccination does not guarantee no cocci either.... even with the vaccination one must strive for all to be dry dry dry in their pens and coops.

Short of roofing my pens, there's nothing I can do to keep them dry. We are in the woods under trees with eons of leaf mold and deep rich soil intertwined with tree roots. The pen slopes toward the coop, which is raised off the ground and no water penetrates at all-the coops are completely dry inside. Still, the intense soupy atmosphere and deep shade make it impossible to dry things out when the rain wont stop. I add shavings, dry leaves, straw. It all wets down, I muck it out eventually, add lime, till it under, and we start all over again. And it seems that every time I have a large batch of chicks, we have long bouts of thunderstorms on a daily basis.

AH that is crazziness bio was good ! I think I got at least a high B which was what I was aiming for. English is next!. I hope thinks dry up there it rained a bit yesterday but its been fairly nice I need to worm my girls though what should I use if I still want to eat eggs? Hope the weather warms up so the beautiful batch of chicks you have stays nice and healthy!

Thanks,
Henry

I really feel that THEY do understand that their buddies are no more...

When Slifer died, I took her through the house and was crying and Obelisk had to go through the house calling for her until I told her that Slifer was gone...

I almost think it's like a wake for a person...even my work birds did that when Rumpless-tiltskin, a Society finch died. They all got quiet and went to the back of the cage so that they could see her one last time...And it wasn't just the Society Finches, it was the Gouldians, the Spices, the Zebras, all of em.

Good luck with your test, Henry.

My birds are in a chicken tractor, so it gets moved everyday to keep them out of their poop and hopefully healthier, but so far not working to well. a week of rain is a real pain. Normally it's painfully dry here. My layers love it when DH floods part of their run with water. I tell him it's not good for them, but since they love it so much, he won't stop.

Good luck with the chick's Cyn, I know how you feel about not wanting to deal with one more thing. And good luck to Zane too. BTW, his brother got a nice new home the other day and they'll be good to him. I was afraid he'd end up in somebodies soup. I was asking $2 each for them, and the guy gave me $5 He was really a looker though.

That's good to hear. I'm about to call someone to get all my extra cockerels, if he will. Dont want to hang onto them till they're 13 weeks old like last time. I hate these nice breeder quality birds going to a local guy who may use them for breeding, but also may not, if you know what I mean. I just have too much on my plate and I need the numbers in the nursery coop reduced ASAP.
****BTW, left Zane out in his sling, came in to let the dog out, came back out and there is the sling, with NO ZANE. My heart sank then I saw him. At first I thought he was on his feet, but it was just an optical illusion. He somehow got out of the sling, which was still hanging and intact, and was about a foot away from it, raised up high on his hocks, his head in the air. I have no idea how he got out of that thing or if he rolled head-over-heels when he did.
