First, I would like to offer my condolences to the Parents of the young boy that was killed. It is an unfortunate event but it lends to many issues present in our complex and highly differentiated society. I live in NJ and racism is ubiquitous; and discrimination present everywhere from localities to the economy and politics, private and public job markets as well as in education. In some of or our cities; Newark and a few others there is a problem of violence between Hispanics and Blacks. It is in the news everyday. No one is talking about it, but Hispanics and blacks have feuded for as long as I can remember. Heck my wife's nephew is Puerto Rican and Black. He was attacked by blacks because he looked more like a Hispanic. However quite simply even within the same culture there is a high degree of discrimination. Lighter colored folk will discriminate against darker colored folk and vice versa. Indians have a class system solely based on this and it is readily apparent in places like Columbia, Chile, Ecuador etc. No one is talking about that.
Second, it brings to question the big debate of large government. You ask, how so? Well we have a exceptional volunteer fire dept. but we also have a ridiculously large police force. The state pension fund is unfunded by almost 100 billion dollars. Why do we have so many police? I am all for smaller govt. and less taxes. It is hard enough to trust the police to do the right thing from what I read and see in the news All The Time. Zimmerman is and idiot and that is a Pandora's Box. I was strongly thinking that we should reduce the salaries and benefits of govt. workers and replace them with neighborhood watches. Now that has to be revisited. I too am a dark skinned minority and I don't know why but whenever I see the news it is always someone in a hoodee robbing and shooting and killing others. This is a bigger problem, but they should have just arrested the dude and charge him and this would not be an issue. The other stuff we just have to learn from all of this and hope things get better. It starts at home.
