    Cornish rocks are small

I am 100% positive that the breed I purchased is cornish X (3rd time raising them and purchased right from the hatchery). They are PUNY this year. What state are you in?

Cause of 9 week old small cornish cross

This year was different, for some reason. I am thinking weather but we have 9 week old birds that are not worth processing. Took 1/2 a batch in and all were around 5lbs which I feel is REALLY small for 9 weeks, especially the cornish cross. We did feed non GMO feed and I thought maybe it was the...

How many of you FULLY Free Range your Cornish X Meaties? Tractors do not count.

We fully free range with electric chicken fence that we move weekly. This batch has been awesome at free ranging. I think it's the non-GMO food. They act very differently than the last 2 batches. Unfortunately, the activity has caused the cornish x to not gain as quickly.

    What causes Pasty Butts?

I've raised 6 flocks and it seems like a few get it, no matter what I do, at around 1 week and then it just disappears the next week. I give the ACV, heat lamp with plenty of room to move to or away from the heat, etc, etc.

    HEADS UP AVIAN INFLUENZA ALERT

Just chiming in here. There is a theory from an avian vet that the backyard flocks (even those still free ranging) are not as susceptible because they are exposed to more pathogens, have less stress and are better apt to fight off the disease. In addition, they believe the fans are circulating...

Chicken was stuck on electric fence

She did not make it. She's a meat bird so I was hoping to keep her until Saturday when we are heading to the processor. I tried sugar water and ACV (Braggs) but it didn't help her. She did have a ton of brown fluids coming out of her mouth upon death so maybe she has sour croup too.

Chicken was stuck on electric fence

We have broilers and with an electric fence and one of our chickens got "stuck" in the electric netting for, who knows, how long. Now she is VERY lethargic and almost dead. Has anyone had this happen before?

    Think I may have a few non-meatbirds.

Yep, the 6 that were smaller are a different breed. Problem is that 2 are roosters. I believe they are leghorns too. Have no clue what to do with the 2 roosters.

    Transitioning feed

I am giving them scratch right now and some BOSS to supplement. Probably a 1 - 5 ratio. I can bump that up when they are older too. They seem to like the food, it's all lacto-fermented.

    Transitioning feed

When did you go from starter to grower with meat birds (what age)? Also, did you do a finisher the last few weeks or just stick with the grower?

Quality of fermented feed after it dries

Mine were like this for the first day and then they ate it like crazy. In fact, now when I go in to feed in the AM they swarm me. I do drain some of the water out for a few minutes so that it's moist buy not like slop.

    Pasture issues

It's only the fat ones LOL. They grow faster than the adult feathers come in. The little ones seem to be faring better. I just moved them to a bigger area (horse stall) so they have more room to move around....but at 2 1/2 weeks they still hang under the heat lamps all day. It's just really cold...

    Pasture issues

I am wondering if these cornish x's will ever see pasture! The weather is horrible here. Anyone else have this problem? I live in Michigan and the chickens are 2 1/2 weeks old and some are quite bald. No way they can endure this weather. Not to mention there is no grass anyways. Bummer of a year...

    Think I may have a few non-meatbirds.

I have the same thing going on here and they appear to be roosters. I think they are just really low on the pecking order. My meaties are getting pretty big. I need to cut them way down on food and move to our horse stall so they get more exercise. The little guys are just not growing as fast...

    Chicks not eating fermented feed

    Feeding routine

ing Right now they seem to eat day and night as they are little. Will they also eat at night when older? I ask because I'd like to have them eat forage during the day and then provide them their bulk grain at night. Determined to keep them a bit more active to prevent problems. We are not doing...

    Chicks not eating fermented feed

Do I need to give them time? They want nothing to do with it. Right now I just fermented their commercial grain. They are only a week old so I wasn't sure I could add much more to it. Thoughts?

what pan or bowl to use for chicks with fermented feed?

I am making my first batch of fermented feed and wondered how to feed it to the chicks without making a HUGE mess. Once we have the food in the coop area we are going to use gutters. Should I just use bowls for now that take up less space?
