I'm not sure I can do this on here yet, but I'm putting my feelers out, and thinking of selling my mixed flock fertilized eggs: LF white Silkie rooster: Hens; LF Blue Cochin, Buff Orpington, Columbian Wyandotte, Welsumer, bantam RIR. Would anyone be interested in something like this?
Hello, and welcome.
A lot of people put the watered up on a brick. I set mine in a shallow pan. Unless you have a small chick shallow waterer, then you'll want to place marbles, or those flat glass decorate rocks in their water receptacle -so the chicks don't drown.
This thread is just cracking me up!
I too was wondering why "Codieshell" hated their chicks... Lol.
Yes, Silkies do have black skin, meat & bones. I have never eaten one that I know of.
These chickies are all so gorgeous... How can like just one?
Silkies take longer to get the hang of...
You can see in the picture here the size of the Silkies in comparison to the other breeds. They are the same size as the Colombian Wyandotte, and nearly the same size as the Orpington. There is a little dark bantam hen in the picture for size reference.
I also have 'rare for the US' LF Silkies -Not bantams, nor are they cross bred. Same size as my Buff Orpington & Columbian Wyandotte. Obviously larger than my bantam, yet smaller than my huge LF Cochin.
It's not that they don't exist. They just aren't common, and are a specialty breed.
The purple (which I don't see on my little phone screen) is most likely the blue coming through as most black Cochins come from a blue line. What I see is a green sheen, and yes, it is a desirable feather trait. They both look very nice, but I agree that #2 may have better composition: rounded...
For anyone interested... I found this "On-line" Cochin show. It looks like they already had the Winter Show, but I see that there is a Summer show coming up.
I like the idea of this, because you don't have to travel, take your bird out of it's environment, or expose it to whatever's out there...
* Tip: I read that some people pack their eggs inside a can/canister (like soup/coffee can), and then pack that in a box to keep the eggs from being crushed in shipping if that's any help.
Oh my gosh! Lol! This picture is soooo adorable! Completely made my day. Lol... I still can't get over it, and it's a great picture. Gotta show the hubby (He lives on BYC vicariously through me :P).
I highly recommend "Harvey Uuserys" book -which was recommended to me to answer a lot of your questions. It really helped me make a lot of descisions with my flock, and ways to utilize everything full circle -from hen house to garden.
When I was younger we lived in Kalispell, Montana, and lived...
