I think "Managing Your Flock" is a very appropriate place to post this. Unless you want the government managing your flock for you, go to change.org and let the president elect know how you feel about the USDA tracking your chickens.
You have to sign up to the website. If I am reading...
this is a short video that shows how chickens hold their head still to orient themselves. I thought it was fascinating.

I have one chicken who sometimes makes a very high-pitched squawking sound. If I had to guess what sound a chicken makes when she is hoarse, I would guess something like that.
If I had to compare it to something, it reminds me of the turkey calls my uncles used to have--the kind where you...
It was an accident, obviously. I bought a parfait from the grocery store for lunch and it was moldy. I didn't notice until I'd already taken a bite. (Just a small bite.)
There wasn't any mold on the part that I ate, but it tasted "off" you know. You can tell when something is beyond its useful...
My aunt Susan & her husband Craig are in Macclenny, FL. Craig is working on a construction job in Jacksonville. They are living in a 5th wheel travel trailer somewhere. I have not been able to get Susan on the phone today. Her cell just says "not accepting calls" when I try.
I talked to her...
I just bought a domain name. (Don't bother looking. It's not up yet.) LOL
I need a logo. And while I do mess around with MS Image Composer a lot, I don't have the skills I need to make a picture like I want.
The site is called Hall's Little Farm (hallslittlefarm.com) The main background color...
For my birthday earlier this month, I bought myself a stoneware coffee service from our Thrift Store. I have wanted one for years and years and just happened to find all of the pieces to one scattered around the store.
I got the coffee pot for $4. Set of four cups for $2 and the sugar & creamer...
I have been following the self-sufficiency thread pretty closely looking for ideas to help me take better care of my family all by myself.
Then, I get a call this morning at work... (I'm an apartment manager)... One of my tenants walked outside and saw a raccoon on his front porch this morning...
Well, really I'm sure he's sick, I just don't know what's wrong with him.
He came in an hour late this morning. (Not entirely unheard of. He IS the boss, after all.) He got here and his son (my other boss) went out to help him get some office supplies out of the car and bring them in. While Sr...
My little boy doesn't eat much dairy. Hardly ever. It makes him really bad constipated. So obviously he loves it.
I found the recipe how to make home made ice cream using two coffee cans and that is something he would SO MUCH LOVE to do!!
He drinks mostly rice milk (sometime soy.) Would...
Ok. I have six grown hens who have been living together for several months and getting along fine. (The two rir pick on the others, but nothing vicious.)
They live in a run with a coop attached.
I also have five 2 month old pullets. About a month ago, I did some changing around. Here's what I...
My son (a graduating senior) wants to go to college there. SO FAR FROM HOME!!!!!!!! :o
I'd like to learn something about the area from people who actually live there.
The school is a computer science technical school.
Texas State Technical College, Waco. Any alumni around?

How does feed store dog food measure up-nutrition wise?
Having worked in a vet for a while, they really pressure you to buy premium dog food. I always try to buy at least Purina (they really push that Science Diet and Eukenuba, Iams, etc...)
Well, today, I just broke down and bought 20# of...
I'm looking at getting some chickens from a local breeder. If I do, how long do I keep them separated from the rest of my flock? I can never remember.

I got 2 RIR and 3 BSL pullets from the feed store a month ago.
One of the BSL is HUGE. She towers over the others. Also, while the smaller BSL have pretty red tipped feathers on their bodies, the huge one has a really pronounced red ring on her breast and around her neck.
I was just wondering...
Ok, after some thought, I decided this belongs in the chicken behavior section instead of the chicken coop section.
I have a chicken house attached to a 6'x12' six feet tall run with a wire top on it where my chickens live. They don't free range at all. Too dangerous. SO...
I was thinking...
I ordered this one from Ideal and supposed to be a dominique. I don't know exactly what a rose comb looks like, but her comb is different from all the other hens I have. I am putting a full body pic (sorry for the blur, she was moving--little hussy!) And a close up of her comb. Thanks...
To wit:
Today while he was cutting the grass and Brennan (4 yo. son) and I were feeding and playing with the chickens (six hens), hubby John comes up and says
John:(waving his hand around to indicate the 20' x 50' space where I have intended to make a garden spot) We should just fence this...
