What great photos - thanks for both beautiful and not so perfect individuals shown, and the concise evaluations. A pea? Really? Ugh.

Since this is a learning thread, can you give some things you like and don't like about your birds, and things you would like to improve? A good chance to compare the two hens especially. The opinion of an experienced breeder is very welcome.

4H, during shows judges are usually quite busy and don't always have the time to make individual comments. If you wait until they are less busy, between or after classes, many will discuss your birds with you. Walt is often mentioned on other threads as having been very helpful to people when...

When you say smutty, are you speaking of the beard or her overall color?

TLS, thank you for the excellent feather pictures - it is so helpful to see a clear representation of good and bad. JMO, selecting color and pattern that requires double breeding for correct birds is not a great way to establish excellence. Few people have the space and resources to pick more...

For those posting pictures, this is an excellent example of the best view for evaluation of carriage, color and type - a profile (from the side) view, sharp focus with the bird well-lit and standing squarely.

One of the downsides of online chat groups is that the subtleties of normal conversation can often be lost, as normal conversation includes nuances of voice and body language that are so helpful when having discussions. Emoticons are sometimes used to help express non-verbal cues, but for some...

For oil supplementation I would add Hollywood brand safflower oil to the list, it is processed in a way that retains the essential fatty acids in safflower seeds and is supplemented with Vitamin E, which help support immune and skin health.

Thank you Ross for joining us and for sharing that amazing presentation. I would like to encourage you in your book-writing, you have a fine turn of phrase and a clear way of stating things. One of the more valuable sources of information we see here is the books that were written many years...

I would also like to know how old this guy is - could he still fill out more in heft?

As far a why roosters should have a good tail spread, it is for the same reason - a wide pelvis. They may not lay eggs, but they will still pass on their anatomy. There is a saying that maybe you all are familiar with - "as useless as tits on a boar hog" (hope we can say that here!). Well, if...

Thank you 3riverschicks and Dragonlady for well-written and easily understood explanations. I will take another look at the pics posted. Do you experts have any comments on some of the birds? Anything that particularly strikes you (good or bad)?

This thread tends to slow at times, as people hear about and come on to contribute and the judges have the time to look at the contributions - patience is well-rewarded here.

My comment would be - that bird is the perfect accessory to that pretty lady's outfit - she looks like a large golden handbag

If you think growing greens are hard to find in Georgia in the winter you should come to northern Michigan - the last of the snow just melted last week  I do feed some calf manna, especially in the winter. I have been told it is good for yolk color.

I was curious about the green/ purple sheen issue. What I found was that Ap may be related to the presence of green sheen, while ap+ is associated with the absence of green and presence of purple. If you have a bird that its ap+/ap+, and crossed it with a bird carrying Ap, you should be able to...
