You'll probably want to set 6 eggs at the very least because since hatch rates are lower with incubation and especially with shipped eggs. Would you be willing to consider buying from this seller on ebay? I actually got a set of eggs from from ebay to start my flock. I set 9 eggs and hatched 4...
I have fertile eggs but not enough at one time to get a good number to you before some start declining in hatch-ability. Maybe next Spring, though. Where are you located?
I think I may "chance" eating them if I find any in the pool. Can't be much worse than them being smeared in duck poop and dirt, can it? I guess that water does get pretty gross though :/
We lock ours up at night and they free roam during the day. So far they have already laid their eggs in the coop or run before we let them out around 7am.
I had to give a drake away because my two were not getting along with 4 females to share. But I have heard of other people not having issues with more than one drake, so perhaps you could get lucky. As for the butchering, the cleanest and kindest (at least from my perspective?) way that I have...
P.S. If she helps you significantly and you want to especially thank her, ask her about her contributions page. She spends a lot of time & energy helping others out. Even gets up in the middle of the night to meet people on here to help w/ assisted hatches. :)
So sorry that happened :( if you don't get much help on this string I really suggest messaging this gal

She could probably help at least some - she has a lot of knowledge on how to handle injuries and the like!
Thank you! I incubated them in a food dehydrator :P which died in the last few days of incubation so I hatched them with a heat lamp - they made it! Whew.
So far our drake doesn't harass the girl too much but we are watching closely for signs of that. He is just now starting to mate, though...
Don't know if you can tell by the pic but my drake is a hoss, probably 7ish pounds. His
gals are average though, and one of them is quite petite, probably similar to Lynss94's Pepper :)
Wahooo I'm happy :D
Your ducks look nice and healthy to me! I don't think Khakis get real big anyway. I'm guessing your Pekin will continue to grow though. They get hormonal freckles?? Haha cute
Oh yippee, maybe there's a chance I have a good hen-to-drake ratio after all! I already had to get rid of one drake because the other it hatched with started being a serious jerk to him once they got their drake feathers and the dominant one wanted both females to himself. This one I am not sure...
Is the whole quack thing to determine gender not always reliable then? I have what is potentially a dark female that looks a lot like yours but sounds more like a male. But he/she is 2.5 months old (10ish weeks) and has no signs of developing male markings.
Do you have a concrete floor in your coop? I would love to be able to hose ours out daily! We are using an already existing coop for the first time on a property we just bought and after putting our ducklings out there we got a ridiculous amount of rain for several days and found the roof of the...
