That is so distressing and it is why I lock the human and pop door every night. I use keyed locks on both. We have people that wander a little too close for my liking here. Between the lock and being out with the dogs every couple of hours, it helps deter wanna' be chicken nappers.
Here are my numbers: Set 42, Hatched 17. Barnyard mix (cream crested legbar and dark brahma roosters over a mix of hens).
I think I made a few accidental sexlinks or autosexing. We are playing "guess the mommy and daddy" and then will run the punnetts on them to see if we are close.
I had a...
8 out and 7 more piping already of 26 and they were set to hatch tomorrow!!! I might have to check my incubator for temps, hot spots, and such. I have never had this many hatch this early before. Of course, I did the drawn down side up style at lockdown (thank you Sally 101!) and maybe that had...
Candled last night... 25/42 looking good. Considering that 10 of the eggs I pulled were clears from the same hen (she must have something wrong with her since I know she is being mated) it is not too bad.
I don't think we have a an avian vet around here, let alone one that will look at a chicken, besides, I find it cost prohibitive. She seems perfectly healthy and lays nice, albeit very round, eggs about 4 times a week. It is a strange thing to hear her peep though. It constantly has me looking...
I was so far behind (over 300 posts) I just had to skip ahead and jump back in, I hope I didn't miss anything... I will go read the daily digest to be sure!
I candled yesterday and pulled 14 clear eggs. Oddly, 10 of them came from the same hen. I remember her eggs not hatching last year too...
Oh no! It is such a terrible thing to witness. A few years ago we came home to a pair of fox attacking our flock. They got 8 before we got them to leave. I would chase one and while it had me on the other side, the other one would come in an get one. Keep a close watch. It will be back again...
My DD asked me if I could figure out how to stream it to the flatscreen so she could "multitask". She is her mother's daughter through and through.
Yay!!! Congratulations! on the hatch, not the mess. That is very messy. I hope the chick is ok...
We only have basic cable, and I am thinking of dropping that too, but as it is bundled with my internet I am not sure what we will do yet. The Emu cam is waaaay more interesting than anything I have seen on tv in a while. It will need to have a sequel "the brooder cam". I have a feeling I could...
I love it. 5,000 channels on cable, the entire internet at our disposal, all of the other trappings of life, and here we sit, glued to the "emu cam"! At least we all have our priorities straight! Even the 7 year old is hooked. I thought she was going to have a heart attack when it went off air...
