I've got 3 different age groups growing out so I've been watching for ways to tell the sexes apart. With mine I'm finding the girls back and tail feathers come in before the boys and the boys legs are thicker than the girls.
I've got 3 different ages that I'm looking at and I "think" I know boy/girl, but I am just not confident yet. These are my first hatchlings that I have kept to grow out so still trying to pickup on clues here and there. I also have 8 more due to hatch this week.
At this point I think they will be black.
I keep hoping to hatch a black pullet or two just sonunhave all three colors, but so far no go. I've had a couple of black Roos but did not keep them.
These are hatched from my birds. I do sell, but only local.
Have 2 more batches under broodies! One to hatch in about 2 wks and the other just started 3 days ago. Gonna have my hands ful cause I already have 3 sets of babies in the brooders and 4 hens sitting.
I know blue is the most popular but they are all beautiful. I have blue and splash and would love to add black just to have them all. I've got 4 local folks who want chicks and color doesn't matter to them, but half of the eggs I set were not fertile :-( so it may be time for a new roo.
Out of the breeds I have, this by far is the toughest to sex! But also one of the best I have. Too bad they don't hatch with a pink or blue feather to help us out. :-)
That's what I had settled on too until we did the first hatch. With 3 splash and 2 blue hens I thought the hatch would have been mostly splash. When the hatch numbers wee even splash and blue it got me questioning his color again. Either way doesn't matter to me. He is great with the girls and...
I've been on the fence about my roo's color, splash or light blue. You can see in these pics he is considerably lighter than my blue hens, but darker than my splash ones.
A friend did the first hatch a few weeks ago and ended up with half blue, half splash. He is over 2 blue and 3 splash...
