What a lovely brooder box home they have! Some lucky young birds there. I see a lot of grey in all your birds unfortunately. It makes me wonder what their parent look like. You can end up with very grey offspring from parents that are close to the correct color but it seems more likely someone...

Skin Color w Yellow skin color. Recessive. W+ Dominant wild-type gene. Autosomal white skin gene. Prevents the transfer of xanthophyll into the skin, beak and shanks but does not effect the eye iris, egg yolk or blood serum. This gene is considered to be the wild-type because it is present in...

Actually white is dominant, yellow is recessive. And the mottling gene that causes the Mille fleur pattern is also recessive. The blue or green pigment in the legs is more difficult to get rid of than the white as it is recessive as well if I recall. I would breed a an EO with white legs if she...

Tony well said and in lots of ways I can't disagree with any of your comments. I would like to think there are multiple ways to reach an end goal of APA recognition of a new breed but there is no question that traditionally a breed association has provided an effective method. Thank you and let...

I like the look of your cockerel Happlessrunner. He has nice color and type from what I can see. The EO SOP is up for review on the EO forum as we speak. A more detailed description of type (back and body) and plumage has been suggested. As well I did try out a change in the marraduna color...

ronott1 is completely right CackleJoy. Many good breeders, APA judges etc. don't know or care to know any genetics and they are better at breeding and selecting birds than I will ever be! For me it's a tool, it helps me understand more about what I'm seeing and why and sometimes helps me...

Referencing pg 190 of the Genetics of Chicken Colours book, under Golden brown is listed "Vasca" as eWh/eWh Co/Co (Mh/Mh). Vasca is another name for EOs so definately wheaten base with columbian. I am not clear on where the Mahogany (Mh) comes into play and it is listed in brackets by Sigrid...

I too am off to a show next Friday with 12 EOs and I would love to modify the SOP prior to going but I don't want make changes without providing the opportunity for group discussion. Survey results are still coming in as well. I'll will put together a draft with suggested changes for discussion...

The marraduna and gorria are most definately eWh based, no question. That's published in the literature and you can see it in the color of the chick down as well.

I agree Laingcroft. Buff Catalana males are described as "buff", "reddish buff" and "golden buff" and females as "buff" and " golden buff" so perhaps thise would be better descriptors for the marraduna basques as well. Looks as though some changes to the draft SOP color descriptors are needed...

Feedback on the draft SOP is absolutely welcome Laingcroft and I know sometimes a description looks okay and then, as we learn more, it becomes easier to recognize where there might be room for improvement. Your feedback using your knowlege of new hampshires is great! The color we are aiming...

HapplessRunner it is likely we will make some slight modifications to the EO SOP shortly after the survey responses are tallied. There is a question in the survey on the number of points on the comb to decide upon as for the APA a range (currently 5-7) is not acceptable. Also there is a question...

I wanted to bring this survey to everyone's attention one more time. So far 40 people have responded so thank you to all the EO owners who have taken the time!

Several people have entered EOs in APA sanctioned shows the past couple years (mostly in Canada) and and I think exactly how things are handled has varied by show. That said almost everyone that i know of has provided a copy of the draft Euskal Oiloa (Basque) standard to the show organizers...

Thanks FRF, i check this thread out here and there, can't really resist anything to do with EOs. And I wanted to make sure the EO survey get's the best response possible. We were at 29 responses so far last time I checked :yesss:

Actually the answer is YES there is hope of getting the yellow legs in chicks from your three white legged birds. Yellow is recessive so it can be hidden by the white. At most you can expect 25% of your chicks from this trio to have yellow legs if all your birds carry it. If is also not a...

Thanks maggiesdad for posting the link! Anyone and everyone who owns or breeds Euskal oiloa (basque) chickens is invited to complete this online survey about the breed. The survey is intended to allow better understanding of the North American Euskal oiloa (EO) population, the reasons that...

The pure white birds are the result of recessive white. You will not be able to use them to breed for the Zilarra color as the Zilarra has black in the hackles and tail (columbian pattern) which recessive white will not allow for. If you breed two white birds together you will only get white...

Thanks ChestnutRidge. I have read just about all of the articles, posts etc. on the links that you provided. I think I need to sit down and give this my undivided attention for a day or two and make some notes.
