Ya she and the babies can still see the flock and the mom is very protective but like you said if one gets attack and she runs over there another could get attacked so I don't like taking risks I felt bad for her because she sat on eggs until like day 30 and nothing happened so she sat on more and here we are with 4 babies. I would feel horrible if they got hurt or killedGood evening café and welcome aboard @Bird fanatic
I can relate and usually keep my chicks and their broodies separated from the flock in their own broody coop with attached run in our garden close to the house. They still can be seen by the flock of adults and the roosters stay near for protection.
But we have raccoon infestations every year in addition to the aerial predators and nasty half feral cats. Although the broodies are experienced and very protective, they cannot be everywhere at the same time when another raccoon family decides to snack on the chicks.
Our property is too big to have it all secured with electric fencing, so we just covered the outer fence lines with 9.000-10.000 Volt electric fence and the most vulnerable parts with very durable fishing netting.
They do fine with the misting system. But they have a right of way to access the lines right?
OMG! On all those pictures. What a mess.
I think you should do the humane thing and bring them in the house.
If my broody girls (since 2012) are any indication, once a broody always a broody!
Indeed, it is!They do fine with the misting system.
The 4 of them laid 3 eggs yesterday! That is very good for old hens in the heat wave.
Will you keep them this time for yourself?I have 5 silkie hope to have 3 pullets maybe one EE is pullet
I know!Indeed, it is!
I had 20 eggs yesterday from 25 hens, of which about the half is more than 5 years old. Imagine my surprise.
I think so!Sally, are the chicks enjoying their new digs?
