Bernie is very tall. She has very long legs and always stands very erect. A smaller chicken like Piglet can (and indeed has) walked under Bernie between her legs, and she can easily eat scraps off the top of my side table which is a bit over 18" high (everyone else jumps up on the table).

When I finally summoned up the courage to weigh her I was surprised that she didn't weigh more. She is only 5.5lbs.

I think the long legs may have been why she had the paralysis issue when she was a chick - she was growing her leg nerves faster than her supplies of vitamin B2 could keep up!

Tax: Pictures of a young and very leggy Bernie. After her recovery I was so excited she could walk I kept taking pictures of her legs!

All those on FBA who had been satisfied with the brooders they used gave recommendations ; some had no issue with the same model. It's possible that the auto-switch off was the problem or a defective unit.
He came up with a temporary solution that seems satisfying.

It seems we have another enabler in our midst!
:lau :lau:lau
The world is full of enablers, some where you least expect it.

I have 3 broody hens plus a incubator. I have been good this year, no chicks. I finally got the chance to meet one of my newest neighbors. They have lived in the subdivision 2 months now, but they both work during the day. All I knew from a distance was it is a older man and woman with what I thought to be a Goldendoodle. Yes I noticed right away they had a big dog and was worried about it at first. Good people, dog is contained and only barks when someone is outside and it is out. I was out with mom loading up the truck to take off some stuff to the dump that was too big for the garbage people to take when I spot him pull in and start unloading some landscaping timbers. I sent Rosie in for a dozen eggs. If you live near me, while the girls are laying good you get all the eggs you want no charge. There are 12 houses in our subdivision, 9 of them take eggs, 10 now. Walked up and introduced myself and offered him the eggs which he was happy to accept. We did have a little argument over him wanting to pay for them but I won. I comment that the flower beds looked great and he starts talking about how his wife was in heaven having a place to be able to landscape and plant flowers and garden. Side note, veggies are being planted soon, they also are going to take a bucket or two of manure to fertilize. Then he drops the bombshell I was not expecting. He starts out with my chickens are beautiful. Thank you. Do I ever let them have bitties as he called them. He has a 4 year old grandson who loves to look at them when he visits and is all the time hollering at my chickens from the porch. He was hoping I would have chicks at some point so his grandson could see and possibly hold a baby chicken. I laughed and told him no chicks yet this year, I am holding off until my silkie lays. I did tell him when his grandson visits to bring him down. If he wants to see and hold a chicken I have plenty he can hold or feed out of his hand.

Enablers I tell you, they sneak up on you when you least expect it.
