My very first broody hen is hatching her eggs! This is Janet (my kids love Rocky Horror Picture Show...even have a hen named Brad). Poor girl went broody for the first time this summer and sat on a golf ball for a month! Every time I cleaned the nesting boxes and coop, if move the ball to another box, and she'd steal it back. I felt sorry for her and tucked 7 eggs under her, taking the golf ball out 2 weeks in...which she left her eggs to sit on the golf ball. So...I stuck her back on the eggs and tucked the ball under her. Well today, 3 have hatched, one didn't make it through a very thick tough membrane, and she is sitting on the last 3...one is a dud I think, but I'll give it a few more days. I've had eggs hatch in day 29 in the bator before. She even called them out of the box for a few minutes to teach them how to drink and eat mealtimes from my hand.
