Really fun to read. You're a good writer.

I've set myself a personal goal to learn a new thing about raising and managing my flock every day. April 12, check :).

So true...

Understanding why they behave that way is spot on.

I've tamed a couple, so don't give up on them guys. It's never personal :).

I had no idea about platinum yolks. There's so much beside just behavior and diet.

I'm glad all this knowledge doesn't disappear (my 18yo nephew can't change a tire :) )

Really great ideas, short and sweet!

Hanging corns, dried worms, dust bath really did the trick for me. Although they did fight for the dust bath. So I put a second one. My Brahma spends hours dust bathing... dirty girl :)

Great article Nutcase!

I built a fenced stronghold, 20x12, to keep the critters out and hopefully let some stuff grow for the girls, giving them access depending on the stage things were at. worked out good. just fun to see them roam in and forage on the new stuff.

thank you!

I've always heard horror stories about roosters attacking babies. Never made sense survival wise. Glad this is a criteria.

My little guy a Dutch Bantam rooster is working overtime keeping his full size flock save and sound. He's the sweetest lil guy. Good with chicks, in fact pays special attention and never pecked at them.

Bonus points, fathered 10 chicks so far this year. Hope they inherit his good temper.

A wonderful timely thread for me!!!

There are so many aspects of successful "flock management"... LOTS can go wrong, when you don't know what you're doing. I don't and was raised on a farm but was, distracted and... uninterested at the time :)

Flipside, If you visit http://www.backyardchickens.com on a regular basis, you can't go wrong :) !

This article proves me right :)

Timely for, gotta get these lil guys integrated before I go nuts... staging them in my office/garage is getting to be a smelly situation.. I get gassy but wife says I've got competition from these 5 sub 4oz beasts!

Misconception that chickens are "garbage cans"... quite the opposite!

They're sensitive to salt, acidic food and too much fat especially. I kind learned the hard way myself and wish I had access to this article at the time!

Wow @Fireguy56s, this is very impressive work. I really like the run and the water nipple system. The cleanest coop setup! cafeteria trays is a great idea to make cleaning easier.
