I have been raising my chickens in the "ME" portion of our backyard for the last (almost) 2 years and although I am in a rural small town, I do not have unlimited space. I gave up half of my veggie garden area to raise my girls and it has been a learning as I go challenge to find the right mix for all concerned (thank you BYC peeps!!!). Your article is spot on, I absolutely agree with your take on breeds, use of space and cohabitation with plants, eco systems, neighbors, fuzzy family and hearts. Bravo. The only thing I would also mention  to those who were still making decisions on coops and breeds is the larger breeds can't go high very well. So if you choose the large breeds keep things low (a regret of mine) and if you choose the Bantam breeds, keeping them contained will be your big challenge, they are clever and resourceful little buggers. I also cant stress enough the importance of compost tumblers, mulch and poop boards. Once that is in place, all is right in chicken/people world.
I will look for your recommended book, it sounds good. :D:D:D Mahalo, for the photos and useful article. Right on!!!

Lots to love about this! Cute little solid coop and I LOVE how your enclosed run followed the coop roof line AND terrain slope. Took me a second to catch that and understand what you accomplished with what you were working with. Bravo!

Oh boy, you made me smile out loud! You have great perspective and humor and write what many are thinking in a humorous way. Chickens are little monsters!!! (but we love them) Yes, after all of the above we built a run then doubled the size of it 10 months later. I highly recommend adding toys to the runs too. (hang fruit or veggies). Thank you so much. I hope you try your hand at another article. I'd like to read more of your chicken stories.
PS. Your chickens are beautiful. :)

I think you did a fantastic job with your article. Great detail w/o detailing me to death. I absolutely enjoyed the story and photos of your build. I love the style and thoughtfulness of ventilation, shutters, nesting boxes, roosts, material use... all the helpers!!! It will weather well and will give you many, many, many years of efficient, quality, safe and comfortable use. I also look forward to seeing the finished outside photos when you can. ;)

Great story and photos. Love the functional charm, charm, charm of the Dutch Hip and also, you have saved a piece of your personal history. I think that it's pretty cool that you, like dad and uncle, did it yourself. You sound very aware of the wildlife around you and ready to adapt with raising chicken needs. I think you were resourceful, (too many to mention... egg catch, pooh catch, bench) and clever in areas and that you AND your girls will live comfortable and practical = happily ever after. Bravo! please keep us updated with your chicken adventures! Great upcycle!!!

Bravo! Love the look, thought out and well made! I love fiberglass roof and how light and lovely that makes it. I like the "add ons" of grazing space, quaint and charming. Looks like plenty on roosting space for your feathered kids. Great nesting boxes etc. Not a thing I did not like... even like that you would make it bigger next time!
