Just a great article how to start a backyard chicken flock. Very comprehensive, covering many topics from "Where to get the chickens from" to "Brooder" to "Coop" with plenty of pictures. Easy to read too.

A good idea to fight back the mess that our ducklings will make! I didn't know that DE is so absorbent and thought it is only useful against crawling insects (ants!), so i learned something today.
Would love to learn how you built that beautiful brooder, round plastic kiddie-pools are sub-optimal in using the available space and usually too low to keep'em in for more than two weeks.

It was pretty easy actually, and I don't have any wood working experience. I'll try and get an article up about it soon. Thanks for the review!

Very well written article about the pro's and the cons of prefabricated coops vs. DIY coops. Many, many pictures of different prefab coops!
A little biased towards the prefab's, but you are so right: If you are born with two left hands (like me) it is better to buy a prefabricated coop and make it better than spending a lot of money in wood and hardware and end up with something inferior.
Well done!

Well written article with many pictures. It helped me in the decision that those nipple drinkers are not useful for my ducks.

Very well written article with lot's and lot's of pictures! Countless good ideas all implemented into this built, your future chickens will be safe from predators and can live very comfortable.
Personally i love the idea with the hardware cloth under the roof panels, its a great way to keep weasel & co out of the coop and the use of that black roof cover for the floor. I may steal that idea for the floor of my duck house.

I love those kinds of articles, where you are not presented a »ready to move in luxurious coop, made from Italian marble«, but have a chance to see how the whole thing came together, where the material was recycled from and see what challenges were overcame.
Lot's of pictures, fun to read, keep going!

A very good idea! A Meta-Article, cataloging other BYC articles. We need more of those!

Yes, I agree! It's not easy finding the best articles here on BYC just by searching, especially the member pages. A lot of good ones get overlooked. I guess I'll make that my next project...

Lot's of pictures in the article and fun to watch and read.
What an interesting idea to include a window of the human's house into a chicken coop!
I don't know much about chickens, but i definitely would not do that with my ducks.

How come? Ducks self, conscious? <wink>. Or demanding every time they see you? Hmm, sounds like some pullets I know.

I keep asking myself. How did this happen? The cost of ducks.

The accuracy with which the various aspects of rooster behavior are described makes this a n excellent article. But i found it somewhat hard to read, it took me a couple of attempts to get through, more like a scientific text. Very well researched and observed though. Should we ever have chickens and rooster(s) i will read through this article again.

I'm glad you commented. I knew it was going to be long, it's taken from my book which is a bit more 'scientific' than is possibly suitable for BYC.
If you ever have time and felt like commenting on the sections you found particularly difficult to read I would be very grateful.
One of the reasons the article is so long is because in the book I can refer to earlier chapters of study papers in the reference section. I found it very difficult to try and make sure I included enough relevant information to make the article understandable.
Thank you for persevering.

I love the video at the end of this excellent article! Very good explanations of how and when to make decisions, supported with many pictures. I feel more confident to help my future ducklings hatch, once i decide to incubate my duck's eggs.

I could not agree more with the author: Many of these large poultry operations where hens are converted into egg laying machines can be replaced by backyard chickens and ducks!

Very well written article and lot's of pictures. I can only agree with the author, mentally challenging young birds in the brooder will definitely result in healthier more active birds. I offered my Spring Ducklings a lot of things to play with, starting with a hollow plastic ball, filled with meal-worms.
Many good suggestions to copy. Thank you very much!

Very interesting article, easy to read and with many pictures. I was not aware the chickens have so many different types of pecks. - I need to observe my ducks closer, they are using their bills as »hands« too.

Thank you for reading the article. There are Muscovy ducks here but there are not enough of them to see behavior traits.
