Silkies, Mixes, and Misc. Breeds

Silkies, Mixes, and Misc. Breeds

I at one point had many Silkies and mixes of them in my flock. When I started breeding silkied Cochin bantams, I realized I liked them a lot more as a breed with silkied feathering. These are the remnants of my once fairly Silkie-centric flock. I have also listed the breeds unrelated to the Silkies here that were one-offs, gotten as a whim or just for fun.

Silkie

Reuben

Reuben.jpg
Name: Reuben
Nickname(s): Reub, Reuby
Sex: Male
Variety: Paint
Crow: "cock-a-doodle-ROOO" - medium-deep pitched
Origin: Rehomed from another BYCer
Hatch Date: October 2014
Random Fact: Reuben is the only rooster I have had to try and fight off a hawk swooping at the hens!

Winter

Winter.jpg
Name: Winter
Nickname(s): Winty, Wint
Sex: Male
Variety: White (from a mixed color crossing of Paint x Porcelain)
Crow: "cock-a-dooDLE-EE-doo" or sometimes "cock-a-doodle-little-loo" - medium pitched
Origin: Hatched from my flock (Reuben x Margaret)
Hatch Date: March 10, 2016
Random Fact: Winter has a very musical crow that's hard to properly describe in text.

Silkie Mix

Amaretto

Amaretto.jpg
Name: Amaretto
Nickname(s): none
Sex: Female
Variety: mixed color (dominant White x incomplete Partridge / Red)
Egg: Small and tan with beautiful speckling
Origin: Hatched from my flock (Winter x Abra)
Hatch Date: June 5, 2020
Random Fact: Amaretto is one of those hens that really, really wants to go broody, really badly does, but isn't much interested in rearing the resulting chicks.

Ganymede

Ganymede.jpg
Name: Ganymede
Nickname(s): GanyMEAN
Sex: Female
Variety: mixed color (dominant White x whatever random Partridgey Easter-egger genes Maggie had)
Egg: Small and grayish
Origin: Hatched from my flock (Winter x Maggie)
Hatch Date: April 19, 2019
Random Fact: Ganymede was named after the largest moon of Jupiter because when she hatched she was HUGE for a chick! She also had a HUGE comb at hatch, making me sure she would be a cockerel. Oddly enough, not only is she a hen, but actually ended up much smaller than her brothers were, about the size of a Silkie hen!

Peanut Butter

Peanut Butter.jpg

Name: Peanut Butter
Nickname(s): PB
Sex: Female
Variety: Partridge? (from a mixed color crossing of dominant White and incomplete Partridge / Red)
Egg: Small and pale tan
Origin: Hatched from my flock (Winter x Abra)
Hatch Date: June 4, 2020
Random Fact: Despite looking very convincingly like a Silkie, Peanut Butter is, indeed, a Silkie mix. Just goes to show how many dominant traits Silkies have! The one recessive trait they do have is silkied feathering, which PB only ended up with due to her Cochin mother having that trait as well.

Miscellaneous Breeds

Harriet

Harriet 7-29-22.jpg

Name: Harriet
Nickname(s): Hair
Sex: Female
Breed: Cream Legbar
Egg: Pale blue, round, and quite large for her size
Origin: Meyer Hatchery in Polk, Ohio
Hatch Date: July 6, 2021
Random Fact: Harriet has the craziest, flippiest, foldiest single comb I've ever seen!

Rangi

Rangi.jpg

Name: Rangi
Nickname(s): none
Sex: Female
Breed: Ancona
Egg: Large, white, and very round, reminiscent of a large ping pong ball
Origin: Meyer Hatchery in Polk, Ohio
Hatch Date: May 12, 2013
Random Fact: Rangi lost a large portion of her comb and half of her right wattle due to a cold snap occurring immediately after a flood in the coop during her very first winter. Despite this, her comb is still pretty huge most of the year--but in the wintertime it shrinks to about half the size!

Roha

Roha.jpg
Name: Roha
Nickname(s): none
Sex: Female
Breed: Exchequer Leghorn
Egg: Large and white
Origin: Meyer Hatchery in Polk, Ohio
Hatch Date: May 12, 2013
Random Fact: Roha hates to see anyone else get attention from me, especially Rangi. But she also does not want me to give her any attention and will flee if I try to pet her.
