What are you canning now?

Cost of living is highly variable. Most of the people I know who can afford to use the jars aren't the people who would regularly use them for an actual need, you get what I'm saying? Miss Nanna Farmbody is not going to be using them but Miss CityFoodie will be.

Cost of living IS higher in this country but our dollar for dollar currently matches yours (but... jar shipping... again, about the same price)... we do on average have a higher income and a more stable economy than America currently. But not 10x better!! hahaha.

Depends on the market. Most country people around here I know reuse commercial jars because they simply cannot afford to use canning jars. The fancier places that can get away with $10 chutneys and things are in the city and even sometimes they use cutesy (and funnily, cheaper) artisan jars. Those are only $2.

I'll show you:

Edit: LMAO suggested retail $8.

(and good luck getting them used, too - doesn't happen here because they cost, well... that)

HOLY #%^!!!!

I sell my jams for $6 a jar... I'd end up selling them for $20 a jar if I paid $4 for jar.

I'm just trying to keep my business rollin'. lol

I have an All American and I love it. It was more expensive than Presto, but it does not have a gasket which has to be replaced every year. The seal is metal to metal. It is heavy and sturdy, and I feel quite safe using it. It is also guaranteed for fifty years. I will be fertilizing roses by that time, and my son will inherit it.

Got it ordered on Thursday and will expect it in 5-8 days

My DH's grandma just gave me a Presto pressure canner tonight. (it's never been used, just sitting in her attic) The book looks like it's from the 70's? It's for sure old, since it says Made in the USA.

Do I need to buy a new seal for it, and if so, where do I get it? I've never used a pressure canner before, so I'd appreciate any help.

I would either have the local extension office check it out for you but if it was me I would buy a new one for sure. There are many stores online that sell replacement parts for the presto canners.

I am returning my jamming pot this week. It could take 4-5 weeks before they will tell me if they will replace it or not. That's a long wait on my pot.

It I wasn't so broke I would buy a new one, but this is after all, my favorite stock pot too.

What kind of jamming pot are you returning and why? I have my new cooper one on order and its back ordered until who know when so I fell your pain.

Sandee

I was using one of my caphalon pots... bad idea! I wasn't even making jam when it burned so badly. It burned making mustard of all things, and carmelized the bottom of the pot over medium heat.

It was TERRIBLE! Not scratches on the pot or anything like that, and now the burnt stuff is peeling up in sheets like nothing was wrong. So I'm sending it back to be replaced... though they do have the option to NOT replace it or return it if they think its my fault. So that will suck. It was a $50 pot.
