Here at the University of Delaware, the football team is called The Fighting Blue Hens. As I understand it, these birds were bred for fighting and aggression. Other than giving my bulldog a hard peck in the nose once in a while to keep her in line, my two Delawares are what I would consider...
My backyard is surrounded by a 6' stockade fence and I have two dogs, an English Bulldog and German Shepherd. Except for an occasional squirrel and groundhog who venture in for some acorns, the yard is pretty secure. In the spring, I'm going to be putting in more shrubbery and plantings for...
I've kept them inside since Friday and let them out this morning. Hopefully, they'll find their way back! Has three days been enough time to get them used to their new home?
Hee hee hee -- I've already been thinking about another chicken (or three) in the spring!
Those Amish fellas who were here sure did a great job. I hope the girls like their new digs!
Thanks!!
I have two Delawares, an Ameraucana, and a Cuckoo Maran. The coop is 8' x 4'.
I feel like a kid on Christmas morning! It's cuter than I was expecting!
The Barefoot Contessa on the Food Network has a recipe for them. There is even a mix available so you don't have to do every fiddly thing from scratch.

Hi everybody! I'm just tickled to death over my new chicken coop! Heck, it's nicer than my first apartment! Look at the little door that leads outside for the girls!
This is a good shot of the roosts...
And here's the window on the left of the house. The windows even have screens...
Hi everybody! Check out this site for some inexpensive and easy to install chicken coop heaters. They also have a timer that will turn on the heater when the inside temperature goes down to 35 degrees, and turns off when it goes back up to 45 degrees. Very cool...
Mine just turned 18 weeks, and I've been keeping a watchful eye out. None at 26 weeks?! Holy cow! I'd always heard that they generally start at 18 weeks. I'll be so annoyed if I have to wait that long!
Hi mdbucks! They all turned 18 weeks on Tuesday, and I've been waiting patiently for eggs - none yet. However, on that very Tuesday, Posh, my Silkie Bantam, made an effort to crow, so I've been somewhat consumed with finding him a new home. I probably have eggs all over my backyard somewhere...
Hi everybody, haven't posted in a while.
Seems that one of my chicks has grown up into a ROOSTER and on their 18-week birthday, started to crow! Definitely NOT cool in a suburban area!
Anyone wanting him who lives in the Delaware area, I will happily bring him to you! He's beautiful and I...
Summer squash, the big, scary ones that have gone to seed, my chickens go crazy over them. It's the seeds that they go after first. I suppose they're okay to feed them, no problems yet.
