How much protein is too much...can chicks and layers share feed?

Thanks for your input. I looked at that feed yesterday and couldn't decide what to do. Think I'll try that next time. Do you think 24% protein is too much for the layers?, just for about one month, that's how long the bag I bought should last.

How much protein is too much...can chicks and layers share feed?

I'm trying to avoid buying two types of feed. One for 6wk old chicks and one for layers. I've been using a non medicated grower that is 18% or 20% protein and supplementing layers with oyster shell. Seems to be working fine; no reduction in egg production. Is this healthy for the birds? Also...

Maggots were eating my hen alive: UPDATE she won't eat

Hi, I'm relatively new to chickens but I have a suggestion. What about NutriDrench? It says on the bottle it'd good for stress. I have read lots of good things about it and it seems to have worked well on my month old chicks. Just a thought. if you can't get that brand I believe poly vi sol...

Has anyone had a brown egg layer lay a random white egg?

That's crazy! She just started laying white eggs? how does that happen? Is it "normal" or a sign of some nutritional or other issue? So far I've only gotten one white egg. Has your hen continued to lay white eggs, if so for how long?

Has anyone had a brown egg layer lay a random white egg?

Ii wondered if it could be the wyndotte. Her's are the lightest eggs I have. But, this egg is WHITE. No spots. A little rough in texture, you know what I mean? The shell is not smooth, but is white and a little smaller than the Wyns. normal eggs. ( Her's are the smallest egs I get)

Has anyone had a brown egg layer lay a random white egg?

I found a white egg in my run about a week ago. All my girls are brown egg layers- Dominique, Wyndotte, BCM. The run is fenced and has wire on top. It is also inside our fenced backyard. Anybody have any ideas? Our neighbor has one black bantom who does fly over their fence occasionally. I...

How long do I need to toss eggs after application of pestcides?

So, I found bugs, not sure if they are mites or lice but I treated my birds with permethrin powder today. I will clean and treat the run/coop in the next few days ( can't get to it any sooner). How long do I have to throw away the eggs. I read I neeed to retreat in 7 to 10 days. I may use a...

Three week old chicks have bugs! Need Advise, please.

I discovered today that my three week old chicks have bugs. I saw them during the day so guessing they are lice and/or Northern poultry mites. I read a few threads to try and figure out what they have but mostly I just want them gone!!!!! I prefer to use natural methods, but they had alot of...

    Aracaunas, EE's, or Ameracauna?

Well, They are not Aracaunas because they have tail feathers. Aracaunas are "rumpless". Past that, it gets kinda difficult. I have some chicks that just hatched 9 days ago from beautiful blue eggs sold to me as Ameracaunas. I have found info on SEVERAL websites and I'm still not sure if they...

Newbie ?s: nutridrench, med. chick starter, grit

Thanks for all the input everyone. Does anyone have any suggestions about what kind of sand? Does it matter? I have no grass in the run but as you all know it's covered in hay. This keeps down the mud, etc. so its pretty "clean". Are you all suggesting that the chicks will eat the sand in...

Newbie ?s: nutridrench, med. chick starter, grit

Thanks Anianna. Since I've not used shavings before, are there any tips on clean up? How often do I change it out completely? Should I still remove solid poops daily or will the shavings dry them out leaving them less offensive? I use hay in the run as well. Should I switch that to shavings or...

Newbie ?s: nutridrench, med. chick starter, grit

Thanks Chicky! One more question. I have read a few articles that warn against aromatic bedding like pine and cedar. The reason being animals kept on it seem to have elevated liver enzymes which indicates toxicity at least at some level even if they don't show major symptoms. I chose hay...

Chicks growing like CRAZY!! Questions. (PICS)

Wow! What nice looking girls! My husband and I always joke about how our girls (1 yr.) were always pretty and never went through that awkward "ugly" stage everyone else's seem to go through! LOL! I would say yours skipped that stage as well. What brand of feed do you use? Any other secrets...

Newbie ?s: nutridrench, med. chick starter, grit

Hi, I have nine 10 day old chicks. They are of different breeds some being bantom. They have been on nutridrench in their water since day 2 and non-medicated feed (crumbles). Meant to get medicated just noticed it is not. I have 4 hens total and the chicks are seperated right now with the mother...
