2010-12-29 Greetings from NW Washington, near the site of "The Egg and I" novel, in the foothills of the Olympic Mt Range. DW thought we should raise chickens, part of our broad effort to get "off the grid," and more independent in case the world gets more "unbalanced." I hesitated but not for...

    Cayene / Crushed Red Pepper

Touche', Eatmore! As the refs inferred, cayenne also works on the brain's pain system, therefore it helps many of us with migraines! I used to "snort" a pinch of the powder until I found a commercial solution in a nasal spray called Headache Buster.

Well, it snowed in upper Gardiner (E. of Sequim) last evening. Two inches; not so bad, but here in the woods it takes forever to melt, and the 1/4 mile sloped driveway turns icey and stays that way! With the forecast for the week to come, I may be snowed, or iced, in again for a while. When the...

    Need advice with Tension/Migraine Headaches

Well, to me, the pepper is more than worth the results! BTW, I just ordered some Headache Buster. $14.99 and worth it if it only worked 50%! Thanks, Claud. The site says it's also sold at Rite-Aid and Walgreens. Man, I wish I could figger out this "quote" feature on the replies... Gonna...

Does it burn though It stings for a couple minutes, but no more than a migraine.

    Need advice with Tension/Migraine Headaches

Yeah, Boyd, the knotted muscles play havoc with the migraines, either via nerves or circulation. Chiropractors can help with that, too. Since no one has mentioned my newest discovery, found somewhere on line, it's cayenne pepper. Sounds crazy, but if you take a pinch (small!) and "snort" it, it...

Quick shout-out from the Olympic Peninsula

Greetings, Pardy! The DW (dear wife) and I are east of Sequim. Where are you on the Olypen? As someone suggested, look for the Washington thread and sign onto it. Quite a few of us in W. WA -- nice folks, of course!

    Preserving eggs?

Thanks, Ridgerunner! Good stuff. I also found another site with about 20 methods, including a couple using a 5 to 20 second "blanching." Others use salt, lime, parrafin, etc. See the list at http://www.oldandsold.com/articles11/miscellaneous-recipes-13.shtml FosteRoo

Good tip, Greg! I found some mis-matched light yellow at Home Depot (Sequim) for about $5/gallon. Looks just dandy on the coop! Your merchant is smart to make it free, as good PR and if no one takes it, they'd have to pay to dispose of that as "hazardous waste."

    Preserving eggs?

A long time ago, I read about a way that raw eggs can be kept (for eating) for months or more without refrigeration, maybe discovered in countries that don't have electricity. Seems like it involved some kind of "blanching," and not a coating on the shell. Anyone know what I'm referring to? It...

Thanks to all who offered coop heating ideas. It's awesome how y'all on BYC are such a helpful community! Herbandteas: yes, please let us know when you're up near Sequim. We'd love to meet, and if you're into "herbs" my advanced RN wife has a degree in plant/herb medicine, maybe something else...

Well... Looks like we're all over "The Other Washington." I'm in outer Sequim, just east of Port Angeles, and across the strait from Victoria, BC. Anyone else on the Olympic Peninsula? Just caught the bug and built a coop almost all from materials leftover from a new sunroom, then found...

Anyone using champix to give up smoking??

I'm really glad that Chantix has helped a lot of folks, but it nearly killed me! I took it for the 12 weeks as prescribed, and blamed my depression on the lack of cigarettes, and put up with the nausea and weird dreams "for the cause." But I have a totally new respect for depressed people...
