These are two breeds I am learning more about because I have some interest in adding one of each to my flock (hens only). Each of these two breeds is obviously gorgeous to look at, and both seem to have extremely gentle & calm temperaments, which is important to me. However, as far as egg...
I live in the city so having a loud duck, who was loud much of the time might become a neighbor issue. So I don't expect a duck to be completely silent all the time or anything, but if my duck were as loud as a rooster and as loud as often as your average rooster, that would be a problem. But...
I'd like to have a pet duck, and he/she would live with my 6 backyard chickens (I'd provide duck-appropriate extras like water for splashing, etc). From what I am reading, a single male duck may be quieter, but he also may be sexually aggressive toward my hens. So I am leaning toward a female...
I think one of your brown chicks is a Brown Leghorn. He/she looks just like my baby Brown Leghorn with that dorsal stripe like a baby squirrel. Too cute!
But if TSC buys some breeds of chicks that have been vent sexed, why are the other breeds they carry straight run? My impression was that the only pullets they carry were sex links. Guess I was wrong though ;-)
Our TSC has brand new red chicks in that they're calling New Hanpshire reds, but they're also saying they're all pullets, meaning they're sex-links, right? But New Hanpshire Reds can't be sexed when they hatch right? So they aren't considered sex link birds. So what are these chicks?
Well, I have 5 hens currently, but I also have a second , smaller coop for them inside their fenced run, which is pretty big. Also, they're only indoors when they want to be (to nest/lay eggs, and overnight when they're locked up. )The rest of the time they're free either in the run or in our...
Here are my 4 baby chicks peeping out from underneath their foster mama, our Silkie hen. The 4 chicks are a Brown Leghorn, a Blue Copper Marans, a Barred Rock and an Australorp. I kept them in a brooder for about a week and then decided to try introducing them to our hen, who as far as I know...
I'm considering adding one or possibly two drake ducklings to my very small backyard flock of chickens - all hens. Is this going to be possible to do without risking hurt to my chickens? Are there any breeds of duck where the drakes are less likely to be sexually aggressive toward chickens, like...
I can't seem to figure out how to get my 5 hens (2 EEs, a Marans and two silkies) to get up or down from the roost bars in the coop. I have one about 2.5 feet high and one about 3.25 feet high. There's a board with strips of grippy stuff like a ladder that they should be able to use to get up...
I'm also interested in getting one or two ducks as pets, and I already have a small flock of chickens. Because I live in the city, I'm thinking that a pair of male ducks would maybe be better due to the noise factor. However, I wasn't aware that male ducks were so aggressive toward female...
Thank you for the feedback! Since we really only want a pet (or two) and aren't concerned about eggs or babies, maybe a drake or two is the way to go. I didn't realize that male ducks are relatively quiet across all breeds. Now I'm wondering whether two drakes would get along okay if they're...
I'm interested in adding a duck or maybe even a pair to my small backyard flock of chickens. I live in an urban neighborhood where roosters aren't allowed due to noise. I'm wondering whether there are any duck varieties beyond the Muscovy that won't be too noisy for where we live. Are there any...
These are 3 of the 4 baby chicks I'm raising now (well, actually an adoptive mama Silkie hen is raising them for me)
Blue Copper Marans, Australorp and Brown Leghorn
