We are on our second flock of chickens and I came here to research some ideas for upgrading our coop. So happy that I stumbled upon this post! Your design is very similar to ours. We live in the Pacific NW and get lots of rain. I don't know why it never occurred to us to have removable side...
One of our girls kicked the bucket when the weather was so cold. She was my favorite, the prettiest, and our best layer too. DH is not as sad - she was very noisy right outside our bedroom window every morning.
We're thinking of getting another chick but is it problematic to get just one...
We were out of town the last few days when it snowed so a friend hooked up the lamp for us. I s'pose I'll keep my fingers crossed and count on them to go where they should be. One of them is hanging in the hen house. Our egg-laying has slacked off quite a bit from 3 eggs a day to 1 (we only...

They're inside a secure coop so they're safe, but dang!, it's cold! We only put the light on if it dips below 30 so it is new-ish. Not never-before-seen new, but certainly not-normal new.
It's cold enough that the waterer in the coop is frozen solid. If we don't turn on the lamp...
We're looking at 25 degrees tonight so I put the heat lamp (with a red bulb) in the hen house. The girls are all hanging in the outside roost. Should I make them go inside or trust that they know where they're comfortable? They sure look fluffed up and chilly....
Obviously a question from a new chicken owner.
I realize production slows with shorter days, but do they totally stop laying in winter? I've a BO, BR, RIR and Ancona.
Just curious. We're not planning on simulating daylight in their coop.
Thanks.
Our BO started laying about a week ago. For about 2 weeks now she has been VERY vocal in the morning - usually between 6:30 and 7:30. We also live in an urban area and I'm fully planning on bribing the neighbors with some fresh eggs as soon as all the girls jump an the egg production...
She seems to be fine - eating well and behaving normally. Still has the pale comb and wattles though. I'm thinking they were more red until a few days ago, but maybe I'm wrong. I guess I'll just keep an eye on her and keep my fingers crossed.
Thanks,
Julie
I have a 22-week-old Ancona pullet who just started laying 5 days ago. She has laid every day, is eating fine and generally seems healthy. My 3 other girls all look fine. Should I be concerned? I've seen quite a bit about mites, worms, etc.
Thanks,
Julie
Excellent! We have 4 hens and 2 nest boxes. The 2 who are laying each have their preferred box and fortunately nobody is sleeping in them. The shavings in there have stayed really clean (eggs are so petite and clean too) so I guess I can wait a week or so. I was worried about bugs,etc...
I've got a BO who just started laying a few days ago. About a week before she started squawking up a storm every morning. This morning it started at 6:30. We live in an urban area - I'm sure our neighbors can hear her too. My beloved is threatening to pack her up and ship her off if she...
