We are on our second flock of chickens and I came here to research some ideas for upgrading our coop. So happy that I stumbled upon this post! Your design is very similar to ours. We live in the Pacific NW and get lots of rain. I don't know why it never occurred to us to have removable side...

One of our girls kicked the bucket when the weather was so cold. She was my favorite, the prettiest, and our best layer too. DH is not as sad - she was very noisy right outside our bedroom window every morning. We're thinking of getting another chick but is it problematic to get just one...

It's chilly but they won't go inside!

We were out of town the last few days when it snowed so a friend hooked up the lamp for us. I s'pose I'll keep my fingers crossed and count on them to go where they should be. One of them is hanging in the hen house. Our egg-laying has slacked off quite a bit from 3 eggs a day to 1 (we only...

It's chilly but they won't go inside!

Quote: They're inside a secure coop so they're safe, but dang!, it's cold! We only put the light on if it dips below 30 so it is new-ish. Not never-before-seen new, but certainly not-normal new. It's cold enough that the waterer in the coop is frozen solid. If we don't turn on the lamp...

It's chilly but they won't go inside!

We're looking at 25 degrees tonight so I put the heat lamp (with a red bulb) in the hen house. The girls are all hanging in the outside roost. Should I make them go inside or trust that they know where they're comfortable? They sure look fluffed up and chilly....

April 2010 Pullets- wanna wait with me?

No, but I am waiting with you. I have a BR and an RIR that were hatched mid-April. So far nuthin'...

    Winter eggs?

Obviously a question from a new chicken owner. I realize production slows with shorter days, but do they totally stop laying in winter? I've a BO, BR, RIR and Ancona. Just curious. We're not planning on simulating daylight in their coop. Thanks.

    LOUD chicken

Our BO started laying about a week ago. For about 2 weeks now she has been VERY vocal in the morning - usually between 6:30 and 7:30. We also live in an urban area and I'm fully planning on bribing the neighbors with some fresh eggs as soon as all the girls jump an the egg production...

    Pale comb/wattles due to laying?

She seems to be fine - eating well and behaving normally. Still has the pale comb and wattles though. I'm thinking they were more red until a few days ago, but maybe I'm wrong. I guess I'll just keep an eye on her and keep my fingers crossed. Thanks, Julie

    Pale comb/wattles due to laying?

Cancel that. Apple Cider Vinegar. I added some to their waterer. Hope that does the trick. Thanks again!

    Pale comb/wattles due to laying?

Darn, I saw one post linking laying with pale wattles and was hoping that might be it. Next question, what's ACV? Thanks

    Pale comb/wattles due to laying?

I have a 22-week-old Ancona pullet who just started laying 5 days ago. She has laid every day, is eating fine and generally seems healthy. My 3 other girls all look fine. Should I be concerned? I've seen quite a bit about mites, worms, etc. Thanks, Julie

How often should I change the nest box bedding?

Excellent! We have 4 hens and 2 nest boxes. The 2 who are laying each have their preferred box and fortunately nobody is sleeping in them. The shavings in there have stayed really clean (eggs are so petite and clean too) so I guess I can wait a week or so. I was worried about bugs,etc...

    Very LOUD Hen!

I've got a BO who just started laying a few days ago. About a week before she started squawking up a storm every morning. This morning it started at 6:30. We live in an urban area - I'm sure our neighbors can hear her too. My beloved is threatening to pack her up and ship her off if she...

How often should I change the nest box bedding?

I have 2 pullets who just started laying a few days ago (and 2 more who aren't). I use shavings in the nest box. How often should that be changed? Thanks, Julie

Who else is waiting the impossible wait?

FINALLY!!! We had convinced ourselves that our chickens were defective, but they (well 2 of them anyway) proved us wrong today. 2 cute little eggs awaited us. I feel like a proud mama. One was the Ancona (20 weeks) and the other was our BO (I think) who is 21 weeks. So excited - I just wish...

April 2010 Pullets- wanna wait with me?

I"m waiting too (and checking the bushes daily just in case to see if they're hiding them!). First time chicken-keeper and we only have 4 girls BO and RIR hatched around April 15th BR and Ancona hatched around April 24th Everyone except the RIR has bright red combs and wattles. Trying to be...

    Drunken Slugs = Drunken Chickens?

Ha-ha! I've given up trying to get rid of my blackberry bushes. I just hack them back regularly. Good luck though. I should have checked more thoroughly before asking about the rhubarb. Just as I suspected: "RHUBARB (Rheum rhaponticum); leaf blades; plant contains cathartic toxins...
