Two probably dumb questions from a newbie

Thanks for the responses. Like most things there is more than one school of thought and appreciate both perspectives. I think I'll leave the set up alone for now, I really think they are just watching out of curiosity and the hope that I have some kind of treat to offer.

Two probably dumb questions from a newbie

I appreciate the responses, I'm sure you are correct the other chickens watch when we are in the yard all the time always "asking" for a treat.

Two probably dumb questions from a newbie

I have been feeding a meat bird feed for about 3-4 weeks and I give a flock of 21 birds about 1 1/2 cups of cracked corn twice daily on most days for the last 2-3 weeks in preparation for this time. My flock is made up of RIR, Leg Horns, Buff Orphingtons, and Barred Rocks. The BOs matured...

Two probably dumb questions from a newbie

Does anyone think that me processing a bird in the vicinity of my coop and run where the other chickens are watching creates any stress for the other chickens? Asking this sounds kind of silly but I swear the others are watching me. :) Secondly, how does one go about fattening up a chicken? My...

    butchering roosters

I understand that this is not a pleasant job and certainly everyone has their own reasons for raising chickens. I made the decision to raise chickens for meat and eggs. This is my first year and I purchased 25 chicks of assorted large breeds from a hatchery with a promise of a few pullets. The...

    First prolapse vent issue

I appreciate you sharing your experience, it is helpful to learn how others have dealt with the challenges of raising chickens. Having spent the last 6 days caring for this bird and reading posts on this forum, I don't think I was correct on my original post calling the condition a prolapse. I...

    First prolapse vent issue

I have never been so pleased to see poop of any kind but we have three poops, not perfect poop, a little runny but it is poop and not just liquid, and she is eating with some vigor. One more day in the chicken hospital just to be sure and then back outside.

    First prolapse vent issue

We seem to be making some progress. The vent has been clear and normal for two days, The bird continues to drink plenty and has just started eating a little on her own. Still no solid poop but a few small runny poops that are being "shot" out not sticking to the birds bottom. The bird is quite...

    First prolapse vent issue

She (I think pullet) just shot a milky white substance about 6 inches out of her vent which remains very swollen. She is more active than previously and is drinking again. Crop is tennis ball size (or a little smaller) and full of liquid, noticeably more full than early this morning. This seems...

    First prolapse vent issue

I am willing to learn to tube feed, I am also willing to go get a rectal thermometer. The doctor's page you posted with those products is the same doctor offering the formula I posted earlier as a treatment for Vent Gleet. I am now more convinced the bird's issue is vent gleet and the prolapse...

    Vent Gleet treatment help

I thought I had a vent prolapse in an 8 week old bird, Now I'm thinking vent gleet. I'm on day two and the bird is not doing well. I need some help with treatment options. This link seems right http://www.birdhealth.com.au/flockbirds/poultry/diseases/vent_gleet.html except that I cannot make...

    First prolapse vent issue

Only problem is she won't eat, or drink. There is so much information and very little of it is in a language that anyone without a vet license can understand. Anyone know what this is; (40mls ER Quik 1ml Gel Formula 2mls liquid calcium) in plain simple language? And where can I get it? And...
