Interesting...thank you everyone. That might explain why one of my grown hens keeps laying a very soft shelled egg. Maybe she is eating the chick food and not the layer food.
How do I separate the babies food (medicated crumbles) from the adult hens food (layer crumbles). Everyone seems to say that the layer food is hard on the young pullets. I keep the food out all day.
Thank you everyone! That silkie mom was the most picked on hen in the bunch so I happy that she got to have the babies. No, she isn't for sale! LOL. But a very loud rooster IS!
Thank you. I am not sure if I will do medicated mash or not. I am in confusion mode now since the first 2 eggs hatched today and I am not ready! I put some water in there, but I know they can go for a few days without anything. The mom is doing a good job so far!
My hen just hatched baby #1 and #2 today with 8 more to go. I was at a lost as well. I did find a little dog crate that fits into my enclosed coop so I tucked it in there and locked up the mom and babies. At least until all the eggs hatch. The other hens were acting stressed and I wondered if...
My silkie just hatched her first chick today. The second one came not long after. There are 8 more eggs in the nest. I am shocked that they hatched! It's my first time. I guess I didn't trust that the natural way would actually work! It's very exciting. Trying to attach the adorable photos to...
I have a silkie that is about to hatch (hopefully) some eggs). I have never done this, so I have a few questions. Most people say to separate the new chicks and momma from the rest of the group. Do I need to set up a red light to keep them warm, or will the momma take care of that? It's still...
I have 4 Buff O's and 2 Silkies that are 6 months old now from MPC and they are very healthy and look great. I did get a Roo that I didn't want, but now am glad i have him. Very entertaining! Anyway, my experience with MPC was great.
One of mine has this too! It seems to be less red today after I rinsed the skin a bit and put on neosporin. Wasn't sure if she got some dust into a tiny scratch or something.
I am very curious as to what others think this might be. I don't see any of the others getting it...
I have a feeling that she got scratched by the rooster so I just washed up the area a bit and put neosporin all around the eye. LIke I said, the eye is fine so I don't want to mess with it. Thanks for your response though. Anyone else have any idea?
My hen has swollen skin around the eye which is warm to the touch. The eye itself looks just fine. I didn't see any cuts or scraps either. Should I do anything? I could clean up the area just in case there is a small scratch I didn't see, I suppose...
I live in Southern maine and the Agway here had never heard of food grade DE. I had to order it from MPC. It was pricey but will last a long time (50 lb bag).
My roo crowed for the first time this morning (8 weeks old). It was somewhat alarming until I realized what it was. I was hoping he wouldn't learn! You are lucky so far...
