Have you ever had a nice rooster?

Maximus is my profile pic, he's 10 years old, rescued as an adult, and absolutely the best roo ever! He is 100 percent love bug, incredibly sweet, very tolerant and totally trustworthy, yet will sacrifice his own life to protect his hens from predators. I love this roo with all my heart. I've...

    Duck not waterproof

This is interesting, as my guy looks as if his oil production is in overdrive. The gland itself looks normal to me, but on closer inspection of his (now dry) feathers, it appears that he is extra greasy in places. Here's a pic

    Duck not waterproof

Thank you :) In Googling the issue, I stumbled upon this https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/common-muscovy-health-problems It describes "Wet Feather" but all of the listed causes don't seem to really apply to my drake. He's free-range on grass for the most part, doesn't get particularly muddy...

    Duck not waterproof

I'm sorry to say, my Muscovy drake is in the same boat. We got our first good rain the day before yesterday and my poor boy looked like a drowned rat when I brought him in that night. Poor thing. He is a strong flyer, his feathers look great otherwise, but there is a small patch near his neck...

    What comb type & breed?

Thank you! You've been very helpful. I'm bummed he is a he, as I don't have enough hens to satisfy 2 roosters. But, I am grateful for the info you shared. Learned something new today.

    What comb type & breed?

Oh! Thank you for the info. How are you able to tell he's a cockerel? I had my suspicions, but don't know what I'm looking at.

    What comb type & breed?

I rescued a new hen (?), and can't identify her breed or predominant breed mix. What is she, and what type of comb does she have? Rose, pea, cushion, strawberry, etc. Thanks!

Frizzle ringneck pheasants? UPDATED WITH PIC

I have seen this too. A male "frizzled" ringneck. What became of the bird pictured? Was it waterproof in the elements? Did the feathers ever normalize with less protein in the diet?

runner duck with shaky legs. any ideas?

After searching every feed store and health food store in my local area, I bought a bag from Amazon. Who knew it would be so hard to find brewer's yeast! I got the Thomas Labs brewer's yeast with garlic. I'm not so crazy about the garlic being in it, but it hasn't harmed anyone. Hope this...

Rescued Muscovy duckling health & chicken integration

Thank you for responding. I've been feeding Layena because of a few reasons, the biggest of which is I don't know what else to feed. He had been on Game Bird chow prior to me getting him, and I'm paranoid with his foot issues of him getting angel wing on top of it. So far, no evidence of that...

Contact a wildlife rehabilitation center in your area, ASAP. Many, like the ones near me, have specialized facilities to take them to.

Rescued Muscovy duckling health & chicken integration

I took in a rescued Muscovy duckling and am in need of some help to figure out if I am doing the right thing with its care. Lots of questions, sorry, that web searches haven't really addressed. I do not know the age or sex. It's old enough that the wings have just started to get pin feathers...

    Japanese Coturnix Quail Color Varieties!!!!

For the life of me, I can't discern the differences between the darker color varieties. What makes a Dark British Range, Tibetan, Rosetta, or Chocolate distinct? An internet search led me to photos of some that appear just a little more reddish than others, but honestly the darker ones...
