I have not gone through all 93 pages of comments, so forgive me if this question as been asked/answered already.
I recently had a hen go broody ...it was a buff that was just over a year old. I would physically remove her from the box and push her out the door of the coop into the run where I...
A friend started selling Hiland Natural feed a year or so ago, and I was buying through her. The grains were whole and it looked like you would want feed to look like, not compressed pellets or crushed into dust. While I can't say that they ate much less than the regular feed, I don't think I...
Thanks MaggiesDad. I saw that link about what age a bird is to be a "fryer" versus a "broiler" versus a "roaster" - great information! I guess I'm looking for a bit more on what breeds folks are using for just meat birds, as well as what breeds folks are using as dual purpose.
What's the...
I am new to raising chickens, and this year only got a few layers for the eggs. I bought what I thought were 6 female EEs, but 2 ended up being roosters. One got extremely aggressive, and after segregation failed to improve his nature and he showed no signs of stopping his attacks on me, he...
I didn't want roosters either, since I am too new to this to be thinking about having hatchlings around, but obviously, sexing isn't an exact science with the hatcheries that supply the local feed stores (and I'm sure no one at the feed store is going to know the first thing about it, either)...
I'm no expert, but I was sold six EE pullets and two turned out to be boys (my pictures/posts are many, many pages back now). The more studly of the boys started getting black-and-white coloring after starting out more brown then the rest, though my red roo was the blondest of the bunch. I...
BriskRooster, I know you are right. I saw a few folks posting more than two, and as this is my first-ever flock, I'm kind of excited about them. :) There are lots of great photos here - I'd hate to have to be the one to choose just 12 (unless they do multiple photos for each month, like a...
Okay, after going back through all the other pages of photos, I'm going to scoff at the rule of only 2 photos! LOL (Of course, you can eliminate these if you wish, but I felt compelled to share my girls, too). Again, the chickens are just under 20 weeks old (the photos were taken in the last...
It's so hard to choose only two because I've taken dozens of photos of my flock as they've grown and I like so many of them! Plus, I've got two really handsome roos, but if I showcase them, then you miss out on some great shots of my girls. <sigh> At this time, my flock is about 19-20 weeks...
I like the black and white mix, too. I also like how "Buffy" stayed mostly red.
I didn't think my husband would have an opinion on the names, but when I offered "Rupert" (Giles' first name), he liked that. I think it does fit better, since "Buffy" wasn't ever a really aggressive bird at all...
Thank you, everyone. I agree with Spike being a real beauty!
"Buffy" isn't quite as "alpha" as Spike is, but I like the "Angelus" take on the name ... we might go with that! I definitely couldn't do "Xander" as that's too wimpy for a roo! LOL
I noticed that the two of them grew faster...
Here's the flock at about a week or so of age. Could they have been told apart that early?
I think they're about six weeks old here:
Just wondered if I should have known earlier.
Dog-gone-it! I had a feeling Buffy would end up a boy, too, since "she" was growing a comb at the same rate as Spike. Phooey! I'm running out of layers! LOL Guess "Buffy" can become "Giles."
Who wants to vote on the re-naming?
Xander
Rupert (Giles)
Angel
:p
I'm just joining this forum because I, too, just realized that at least one of my "girls" is actually a roo. I am afraid I might have a second one (and hopefully not a third!). This is my first-ever flock and I was told at the local farm/feed store where I bought them that they were all...
