    Cochin Thread!!!

I love my standard cochins very much, and have built up a beautiful flock of 15 good birds. But sadly, I am coming to the realization that although these cochins eat a lot, they really don't produce a lot of eggs (like maybe 7-8 a week between the lot of them!). I know they aren't a breed that...

    Large Fowl Cochin Thread

I am new to this thread, and relatively new to the LF Cochin, but I love them and have decided to focus on them as my breed of choice. Most of my chicks this year turned out to be male. Now I have the difficult task of trying to pick a cockerel out of the bunch to keep. I already have a...

    Pigeons with chickens nesting Question

An update: The pigeons hatched out their 2 chicks and the squabs are now 2 1/2 weeks old. The silkies haven't bothered them, and actually now one of the silkie hens has gone broody two nesting boxes over. So far so good. That said, I don't think that this would work well with any other breed...

    Broody Hen Thread!

One of my one year old lavender orphingtons just went broody for the first time. I gave her 14 eggs last night and today she was still covering them effortlessly. I also set 42 eggs in my incubator last night. It will be interesting to see who has better luck... first time mommy hen or me. I...

    So confused about humidity!!!!!!

I am pretty new to hatching eggs in an incubator. I have a Hovabator. I have tried quail, chicken, and turkey, with relatively low rates of hatch each time (~60%). The first few hatches I opened the lid during the hatching to remove chicks, and then I worried that I shrink wrapped the...

Weak newborn poults still in incubator, please help!

They are still both lying on their sides in the incubator. The upper leg on each of them is quivering, the lower leg is stretched out straight, their eyes are closed. They do not look good at all. Is there any hope? Anything that can be done?

    Pigeons with chickens nesting Question

I have had pigeons and assorted heritage chickens together in the past, but the chickens harass broody pigeons and crack their eggs. That said, this spring I put a pigeon pair in with a trio of gentle banty silkies and they promptly started nesting and so far the chickens haven't bothered them...

Weak newborn poults still in incubator, please help!

I helped 2 poults out of their eggs this morning. They had absorbed all their yolk sacs but were shrink wrapped. They came out of the eggs ok, but are still really weak (6-7 hours since they hatched) and lying on their sides in the incubator. Anything I can do to help them get up and at em?

temp drop as turkey poults are pipping!

4 chicks died in the night in their eggs... they had made some progress unzipping, but obviously couldn't get out. I broke away some shell on 2 others this morning but they still aren't out. Their membranes are really dry. This is so sad :(
