Lots of people in El Cajon have chickens. I don't think there will be a problem, especially if you don't have roosters. You can try calling animal control, they should be able to give you the official ruling. I live in San Diego, and we are allowed chickens, but not roosters. I believe the rules...

I also had a great time in Norco, but boy was it windy!! Lots of friendly people, with lots of tiny chickens! Even cocopops, and are they ever cute. Looking forward to our next event here. Is one planned yet? Don't know how I missed the last one here, but I sure don't want to miss the next one...

I also vote for QC supply. The shipping charge is reasonable $6, and there is no minimun order. Just talk to a few chicken friends and split an order, and shipping charge.

I buy bales of straw at the feed store, to use in the nest box and as bedding in the run. Costs about $7 for a 60 pound bale.The only down side is that it is messy and hard to store for my small run (5' x 10'). A bale will last about 3 to 4 months, unless we get a lot of rain.

I've only had it a couple of weeks, and I live in San Diego, so I can't tell about freezing.
