Unfortunately, my vet doesn't know much about hen health. She had never heard of or seen a lash egg before. I'm the one that insisted on the antibiotic when she said to wait before giving her any.
So I gave my hen Baytril for two weeks as prescribed by the vet. She's been acting great, but this morning I found a very large lash egg. Does this mean she's doomed? If yes, how long does she have to live? Like I said she's been great. What should I expect in the weeks/months to come?
How are your girls doing? I'm going through something similar. Like you I've read Salpingitis is a death sentence, but I wonder why then do so many suggest getting an antibiotic. Looking for something to give me hope.
How did it go with your hen? Mine might also have salpingitis. I'm picking up some Baytril tomorrow. I have no idea if I'm catching it early or if she has had it for a while. Trying my best to save her.
@casportpony had alreasy replied to an earlier post of mine. Said to start Baytril and more anti-inflammatory. I posted this because I read Baytril was illegal.
I had her (barely) examined on Monday. The vet was clueless. Had no idea what a lash egg was. I suggested antibiotics, but she said to wait because they can be harsh on the stomach. I think if I called her and insisted on one, she might give it. Just want to give her an idea on what to prescribe...
She was acting ill over the weekend. Not active, lethargic. She was pooping normal and eating, but not drinking. Her vent was pulsating like mad and became swollen by the end of the weekend. She passed her first lash egg on Monday, but was still lethargic and pulsating a bit more than normal...
What antibiotic should I ask for? Just read online that Baytril is illegal to give to poultry in the U.S. Is that true? Is there something else in case my vet refuses to give Baytril? Just not finding the right answers online. I don't get it. People have been raising chickens for forever. How is...
What antibiotic for Salpingitis? I need to call my vet and request something. I just read it's illegal to give Baytril to poultry in the U.S. Is that true? Also is there a blood test to help diagnose Salpingitis? I'm afraid my vet will want to do blood work before prescribing something. I just...
I failed to mention the vet gave me an anti-inflammatory. I believe that helped her pass the 2nd lash egg. I will try some yogurt and ACV in the meantime.
I took her to a vet on Monday. She had very little knowledge of chickens. The vet had never heard of lash eggs or salpingitis. I suggested an antibiotic, she said to wait because they can be very hard on the chicken's stomach. Was that a bad decision on the vet's part? I can call them and...
This is the 2nd lash egg my 2.5 year old Orpington produced over the last 5 days. She wasn't well during this period of time. Very inactive, pulsating/inflamed vent. She laid this one overnight and today she's 100% back to her normal self. Does this mean she's out of danger? I'm going to pick up...
She is an orpington. I don't have it anymore to take pics because I regrettably gave it to the vet. It looked like a lash egg from the pictures I've seen, but it was super small compared to the pictures I've seen. Does anyone know if they eat and poop normally if they are having this issue? My...
