    California - Northern

Thanks! How do you connect a timer with your spigot/hose? I have a mister (homemade, so I'd probably get something like what you linked), but I've always had to manually turn on and off, but this summer I won't be home during the day.

    Bossy Australorp vs. Wyandotte?

Thanks for the awesome feedback! The Buff Orp is actually higher on my list to get than a Wyandotte, but we have extreme summer heat (weeks of 105-115+) and I'm worried it would be unkind to bring a BO into this heat. Wyandottes seem a little more tolerant of heat (I could be absolutely wrong...

    Bossy Australorp vs. Wyandotte?

Hi, I have a flock of four girls and I'm expanding by two chicks this season. Right now, my bossy girl is my black australorp. Even when there's plenty of room around the feeders, she will peck at one or both of my two girls who are at the bottom of the pecking order. I'm thinking about getting...

    California - Northern

Hi! I'm in Northern California, not far outside of Sacramento. Question for you all. It gets super hot here in the summer - like weeks of 105-115. Am I crazy or cruel if I get a Buff Orpington rather than breed that tolerates heat better? Anyone else in the area have healthy and happy Buff Orps...

    Feed keeps getting stuck

I'll have to double check, but I'm pretty sure there's no adjusting my current feeder. Going off the couple images I've seen of the bucket option you're describing, don't you end up getting like an inch or so of feed on the bottom that never gets eaten because it's below the entrance of the tubes?

    Feed keeps getting stuck

...a PVC feeder with an upright pipe and two 45 degree elbows be sufficient - or would I have the same problem with dust build up and feed getting stuck? **Edited to add: The PVC feeder I was thinking of making is similar to the top one in the picture below. I am also open to other ideas, too.

    Chicken Dandruff?

Ok, gotcha. They've had live before but we treated successfully and now their run is covered so no new birds should be getting in. They have lots of dirt to dust bathe in - I saw them all having a good bath yesterday. The birds are about 3.5-5.5 months old on range. Their feet have seemed a...

    Chicken Dandruff?

It's definitely flakes. But are you saying it's an indication of lice?

    Chicken Dandruff?

My pullets and cockerel are doing lots of scratching with their beaks and they all have a ton of what I can best describe as dandruff. Is this because more adult feathers are coming in? Molting? Mites? Normal?

Help with Chicken Guard Automatic Door Opener?

The control box and motor are on the outside and the door is on the inside so would the lever go on the inside or outside of the coop?

Help with Chicken Guard Automatic Door Opener?

So frustrated. I've waited for a month and a half to get and finally install my chicken guard automatic opener. I designed my guillotine door to be on the inside specifically so a predator couldn't open the door and it looks cleaner/nicer to me. But, with all the pulleys to make it work, I think...

    EE hens or Roos?

Here's the darker one's comb. I'll try for a better tail shot today, but I'm keeping them in the cage as I introduce them to my other three chickens, so it will still have the cage in it.

    EE hens or Roos?

I don't know why the other two pics don't seem to have come through, but here's a better shot of the other one's comb, for good measure.

    EE hens or Roos?

Just picked up these two EEs. They're about 4-4.5 months old. I'm hoping hens, but what says the BYC brain trust? [/IMG][/IMG]

    Mites or Louse/Lice Help?

...her and the rest of my flock? Guide me, please - I've never dealt with anything like this (I never even had lice as a kid so I've never dealt with lice period *knock on wood*). Thanks! P.S. I posted this in Managing Your Flock first, because I wasn't sure exactly where this one should go...
