Beyond prolapsed vent? Very worried (graphic image)

One of our Silkie hens had a greater than usual amount of poop on her under fluff the other day. We are still recovering from a snow storm and I saw this during the storm and figured I'd just cut it when the storm cleared. Today I came in after work to check on her and I found her on her side...

Our Silkie hens always die and hatch only roosters ??

I haven't had those particular issues to my knowledge...but I can't help but think there is SOMETHING wrong here. I don't think I am doing anything to harm the birds but they keep doing this. It's very discouraging

    Solar power in MN help

Hey, I've got some suggestions for you on insulation as well as heat and solar. I've got all of those going. So I'm a scavenger so I get everything dirt cheap or free. For insulation they have a foil coated bubble wrap that reflects heat marvelously. You can buy it, but I find large amounts of...

Our Silkie hens always die and hatch only roosters ??

We have had silkies for about two years now. We got our first group of 6. One was taken by a predator, the other two were females and died suddenly at about 4 months. The others were roosters which are still happy and healthy. We bought two silkie hens on one trip and both lived well over a year...

Dual part question here about Red Sex Links and their genetic background

NatJ, Thanks for the info! I am not sure what you mean when you say "silver" I have four Silkie Roosters. One is Buff, one is Salt and Pepper looking, and the other two are White. I'm going to look more into incubation, We had success with pure silkies and silkie x showgirl mixes, but have...

Dual part question here about Red Sex Links and their genetic background

Ridgerunner, Thank you so much! I am very excited to take a look at this. I have also been documenting the characteristics of the chicks as well as the stage of development at which they quit. I'm hoping things will look up for these chicks.

Dual part question here about Red Sex Links and their genetic background

I have four hens that were sold to me as "Red Sex Links" Alongside these, I have about a dozen silkies of various colors. Out of curiosity, I incubated several eggs from the sex links, none hatched but I opened them up and found a nearly fully formed bird that seemed to be silkie dominant...

Allegedly Silver Laced Polish but looks different than the others. Any idea?

Thanks everyone! It seems there is a definite agreement here among you all. They confirmed it is a lavender orpington. I can keep it and they're sending me replacement silver laced polish, so I'm feeling good about this. Why are these so expensive? just the rarity?

Allegedly Silver Laced Polish but looks different than the others. Any idea?

I saw plenty of orpingtons on their site but no lavender ones. I did however google it and they seem pretty close overall, but the legs on the ones I googled seemed much darker than mine. Is that indicative of something different? Thanks!

Allegedly Silver Laced Polish but looks different than the others. Any idea?

I received an order from mypetchicken that contained several breeds including three silver laced polish. Two of the three were dead cold on arrival...and by process of elimination, the only remaining bird is supposed to be this silver laced polish. Though it looked NOTHING like the other two...

    Connecticut!

Dooze, They have one at tractor supply co for like $40. Probably a better value for you to just get one. I have the one they sell there and have had great luck with it. What part of CT are you from?

Silkies finally started laying, then abruptly stopped a week later. That was three months ago... Any

Alright. So it's good to know it isn't likely a health problem. They stopped laying in early december. Do you suspect the winter is to blame? I have several heat lamps and it is quite warm in the coop, but they are exposed to cold when they wander around the enclosure during the day.

Silkie Rooster mixed with Red Sex-Link Hen: Fertile, but Viable?

It was quite a few days past due and no signs of life when it was opened. It appeared to be very tightly cramped into the membrane. So you suspect others will hatch?

Silkie Rooster mixed with Red Sex-Link Hen: Fertile, but Viable?

I out of curiosity tried incubating some eggs from our large hens that moved in with our silkies a couple months ago on the off chance the little silkie roosters were feeling brave. I was very surprised to see several of them were fertile. But by the time day 21 came and went, no hatching. I...

Silkies finally started laying, then abruptly stopped a week later. That was three months ago... Any

A few of our silkies, possibly all 3 of our naked neck girls started laying, but almost immediately stopped. Their conditions haven't changed, they have plenty of food, water, and heat. But for some reason the girls just stopped. Still waiting on most of the silkies to start... We got 8 eggs...

    Sneezing Flock of Chickens

I have done some research on this before, and a lot of the responses list respiratory illness. however, they also list discharge from the nasal area, which our birds do not have. I've been keeping an eye on them for a few months now, no increase in symptoms, the sneezing persists, but no...

Silkie chick with eye problem, worried about possible loss of eye.

The eye is still super crusty but luckily for the most part is open now. I'm worried now it wont be able to blink much and wood chips still get stuck to it, covering it. Otherwise the chick is super peppy and active, so I don't suspect any genetic issues, just bad luck. Thoughts?

Silkie chick with eye problem, worried about possible loss of eye.

The eye was reopened this morning and it seems to have stayed a bit more open, but is still overflowing with sticky fluid. Would it be the worst idea to lose warm water to try to loosen up the remaining crust from the egg membrane?

    Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Hey folks, Just a genetics question: we have 3 naked neck silkie hens in our flock of about 14. They've started laying and the resulting chicks are 2 naked neck, two "standard?" Silkie. Is the naked neck gene dominant or recessive? Since two did not display the presence of the gene does that...
