What color gene am I working with?

Does that mean this lavender is actually blue? How can you tell the difference between the lavender and blue? Are the legs a different color on the blue? Should I breed her to her brother (pictured)?

What color gene am I working with?

Several months back I purchased four orpingtons. A roo and three hens. I was told two were lavender and the other two were black. The roo and a hen were lavender. I incubated several eggs and started hatching them. The first one hatched mother's day and the others are 5 and 6 weeks old. My...

    When to help???

My chicks started pipping last night around 11:30. There isn't any progress 12 hours later. Do I start to help them? Humidity is at 70% and I still hear peeps coming from the egg. Ugh, do I help or not?

    Pellets in brooder box?

I got it from Tractor Supply. It does say it can be used for birds to. I know when I used it in my horses stall it worked great. The pellets just absorbed any liquid and turned to a fine dust. It smells like I have a Christmas pine growing in my bathroom... for now anyway. LOL I'll let you...

    Pellets in brooder box?

Has anyone ever used this in their brooder box? How well did it work? I use to use something similar in my horses stall and it was very absorbent. Chicks should be hatching on Monday! :) Thanks Patrice

I'm just down the road in the other direction about 30 minutes in Chapin. Welcome to the wonderful world of chickens. Just watch out for the huge problem of chicken math. It will sneak up on you if you don't watch out.

    Which one do I trust?

Thank you Duckopolis. I started out with 16 fertile eggs and have lost two so far. I buried the infertile and non vital eggs in my flower bed. I hope to have at least 6 out of the group make it all the way.

    Which one do I trust?

Thank you all for the response. I candled them all tonight and they all are moving around. Should I expect to lose some of them in the coming weeks? What do you all do with your infertile eggs? Throw them out?

    Which one do I trust?

These eggs have been in the incubator for 8 days now. I just got the humidity/thermometer today and put it in there. I've been using the thermometer that came with it. One says a little over and the other says a little under. I only got the other one so I know the humidity in the incubator. So...

Will you please look at my reply above? I took a closer look this morning.

    Cause for concern?

I opened her mouth and saw this. I'm leaning more towards abscess now. It has a fowl odor, no pun intended. Could it be something she got into and now has gotten infected? How do I treat that?

    Cause for concern?

I just got this girl yesterday. The lady I got her from said she thought that maybe she was being picked on and got injured by one of the other hens. That the swelling had gone down. I just haven't seen any notable marks where's someone could have pecked her or scratched her. I do have her...

Anyone close to Columbia area with orpingtons?

I'm searching for white/black/blue/lavender, any of those color orps. I have 4 buff hens and buff roo. I just wanted to add some color to the flock. I'm using them for eggs and just want something pretty to look at while gathering the eggs. I really like the orpington breed so I want to stick...

    Prolapse?

My silkie's vent is protruding. Will this heal itself or do I need to do something? I did notice my roo on her earlier this afternoon. I'm new to chickens and want to make sure there isn't something I need to do to help her. She hasn't laid for a few weeks now so I'm confused on why he would be...
