Chris LGDs are very effective in guarding not only livestock but also homes. Israel has a real need for this so a friend in Israel asked if I would be interested in going to Turkey with him and I did, we went to Constantinople first, then to Anatolia with a contact he had there, we spent 3 days...
Sadly those are signs of our times, your insurance is there in your dogs, the out of sight coop is a challenge, for you and to thieves. I am thankful to be in a rural area where most folks here are of like minds and support one another, but, we are scattered too. A good farm dog is worth its...
Hi Laura
Are those all Buckeyes?
I am aiming for a flock of 15-20 hens and a couple cocks, that will let me have something to work with as well as with my other breeds.
Life is good !
Fwiw, my grandmother had an exceptional flock of RIRs, and taught me much about them, back in the 40s and 50s, one comment she made often was 'if its a RIR it has a RC, if it doesnt it isnt.' The SOP does only have RC in it, but many SCs are shown. People cant read I guess. Judges and breeders.
That 'judge' needs to be not judging until they can answer a thorough oral and written test on the SOP.
Jim is right, the standard is always right, til it is officially changed and then its still right !
CL that 7 mo old broody is something that you REALLY dont want !!
Ship her to me !!
Re: egg shape, I have noticed from their beginning most pullets have distinctive eggs, then gradually they all look very uniform. They do tend to get larger then the initital 'pullet' eggs.
Hi Chickie
Yes, we have snow, solid white in the elevations and in the woods here, Sunday is supposed to come heavier, nights are in teens or 20s, days into 30s, so its just a matter of time.
I like to feed COB, a third of each, for the oats and barley I like it steamed and rolled, I use some...
ChickieLady I totally agree, cooked leftover grains are cooked leftover grains. Thats what you start and end with, far better to mix your own then to feed these leftovers sold at premium prices.
Better to buy and feed your own Corn-Oats-Barley with BOSS, and add what minerals you need along...
Chris thank you for your input. it makes sense to me, as a longtime fan and keeper of heritage RIRs it is what I learned, build the barn and then paint it. You could have the greatest color in the world but if the structure is off what have you got?
I hope to make some shows next year and...
Thanks for the good info gentlemen, it dovetails what I have learned from other breeds , that the male can set the color, and the female sets the type.
I buy Turkey Starter for my new chicks, higher protein and they get great growths on it. I am starting 3 in a couple weeks, special trio.
Buying a trio of older birds is less a gamble, more money, otoh, the ratio over numbers works out pretty close to 55-45% in favor of roos. But in small...
Hi Chickie Lady
I will have to see how far it is to Chehellis, and hope I amnot still frantically building coops etc, I am going to be going down to near Lowell about then. If I can get a critter sitter for here at the same time. Lot of ifs. But they all need to be.
Chickie Lady keep posting picds of him, I might be wanting some of his chicks.
I am planning on around 40 chicks this year, hoping to get 18-20 pullets and 2-3 roos.
