Thank you! Yes, cocci is awful. So glad yours made it through too!

Thank you for sharing! I had Cocci problems in my young polish this year and almost wiped them out. It is a bad bug!! Very beautiful hen!
So cute!! Love the pic of her snuggled with her bear! It is amazing what we do for these little birdies, isn't it?

Aww that's such a cute story. My best hen, Cheepa, (the one who lays eggs like my avatar) almost didn't make it as a chick either. She was really really tiny and weak and...

Thank you flower! What a darling name! I was so apprehensive to name her even after she recovered because I didn't want to jinx it. I guess it's time to give her an official name
Hi guys!
I just wanted to take a quick minute and share a BCM girl that is very, very special to me.
Back in spring I had 1 chick in a brooder come down with cocci. None of the others showed symptoms until a week later so we had no idea what it was in the beginning. Long story short, this...

Hey Bravo, I wouldn't complain about photo quality if I had eggs that looked like that.....Good for you!!!!
Thanks! The lighting and poor quality camera make them appear darker than they really are. If I could find my handy-dandy egg color chart I'd say they were probably a solid #6 egg.
I haven't paid too much attention to see if a specific hen is producing the meat spot. They aren't huge--maybe the size of a pencil eraser shaving.
I will definitely track it and see if it is happening in specific girls. The oyster shell is interesting--mine get it free choice too.
I've...

I've got 2 monitors set up and on 1 I can see it and the other they all look the same. The differences I guess are subtle but to the naked eye there is a difference. Ah, well, I guess since there doesnt seem to be a preference for the hue, it doesn't matter
Thanks Hens and Roos...
Thanks Ivy! It looks like I have a couple of girls that are mediocre layers in the color dept too-- but it doesn't matter anymore. I don't have a rooster to continue on breeding so these girls will just be my city layers
I think you brought this up before but now I can concur--my Marans eggs...
Good morning guys!
I'm gonna apologize in advance for the quality of these photos. My camera went MIA so plan B was my cell LOL and the inside lighting was terrible. I need to get a shot in natural light but lately I leave for work before the sun comes up and get home after dark.
I tried to...

Bravo, Is it a "bloomy egg"? Wet your fingertip and put it on the egg. Does the egg turn red where it's wet? Then when dry turn back to a purpleish haze?? I've got a couple of girls that lay those every once in awhile. Got to go!!!~
Nope, they have a nice gloss to them. I'll try to...
Thanks Debbi and Gilavina! I like the ruby red ones too!
Debbi, I will try to get a photo. The eggs that have the cool undertone don't look that way until they are compared with eggs that have that deep red tone to them--then they almost look like an ashy brown but with a nice sheen. Hard to...
I have an egg question--
What is the desired hue of the eggs? Of course they are supposed to be dark but should they be dark and go toward the red/warm undertones or toward the cool/ash undertones?
...did not get off that nest because there was a thermometer probe in there that recorded the highest and lowest temps and there was nothing below a 96* reading.
From this experience it really leads me to believe that the poo most likely caused bacteria to infect the egg and kill the developing...

Holy moly! I am in love with them both!!
Gorgeous! I'd like you to make me one, too! LOL
This gives me faith that there are some AMAZING males out there!
ETA: Did anyone else notice his lack of hackle striping? I think I saw a few flames in his saddle area but WOW! What a...

I apologize if I have offended you. It is just that you came to the board advertising birds for sale and you don't have the basic knowledge on the breed. IMO, selling stock as show quality when it really isn't is only undermining the Marans breed. There are so many individuals on...

I agree!! I think some of these folks take their birds to the local fair, get a participation ribbon, and call it a "show bird". I really loved the spelling of the people who stole Bev Davis' roo's pic on ebay. They were selling "Black Cooper Mariains"
LOL! Black Copper Martians...

Ditto. I would think if one really WAS showing their poultry, they would know the breed standard AND the correct name, especially the fact that Marans ALWAYS has an "s".
Amen, sista!!
Maybe it is just be, but I get a little annoyed when I see people selling "show" chickens when the breeding stock is obviously not such. Also, one should be able to spell the name of the breed, right? I just feel like it misleads people starting out in the breed and they spend a small fortune...
