Happy Sunday fellow Silkie enthusiasts!🥰🥰🥰.
It has been a very long time since I’ve been on BYC and even longer since I’ve been on this thread. So many gorgeous birds on this thread! 😍
My work schedule has forced me to sell many of my birds, but I still have 8 Silkies left. I have a new little...
They are all so gorgeous!😍
Splash looks female. Pullets can have what appear to be streamers while their crest is growing in but they never get as long as a cockerel’s will.🙂
Photo of 4 and a half month old Kai, a pullet, to illustrate:
Wow I really need to catch up on this thread!🤣
I think...
One of my Silkies, Kana, can actually get up onto the lower outdoor perch that the smooth feathered bantams use.
Interestingly enough the only other Silkie that can do this is her biological daughter Kai, which she did not raise. Must be genetic! They can get back down again. Comes in handy...
I know I think we all miss her on this thread! I PM’ed her a while back but have not heard anything. Hope everything is OK. Maybe she just needed a break!❤️
Polydactyly in chickens seems to be multi factorial in that it is partially genetics and partially incubation.
The single comb is recessive and can be hidden for several generations and then randomly pop up, so I do not know how far back this trait goes. But it must mean that my rooster and the...
6 week old Maggie, Phoebe and Minerva. Off of heat and I’m planning to sell them, but they’re so awfully cute! Maggie has a single comb, the first time this has popped up in my flock. Phoebe has only 4 toes on one foot. So these two are being sold as pets. Minerva, the blue one, doesn’t have any...
With straight run there is a 50/50 chance with each chick.
With only 2 chicks your odds are easy to calculate:
Possible outcomes:
Chick 1/Chick 2
male/female
female/male
female/female
male/male
25% possibility both are female, 25% possibility both are male. 50% chance you’ll have one of each.😊
New photo of my one dominant white from the last hatch. 8 days old. Just hatched 11 more chicks but none of these are dominant white. Decided to keep this one for a bit anyway. Named her Odette after the swan princess, she was quite the ugly duckling at hatch. She’s actually become more swanlike...
I was not convinced this was a raccoon, seemed too agile in its movements.
So, I got my old lady glasses on and viewed your video on my computer with a larger screen. Yup, raccoon. Looks like a young one.
Paints are created by crossing a dominant white chicken with a solid black chicken. Doesn’t matter which one is the male or the female. The resulting offspring then are called paints. Paint is not “carried” as some people say, and there is no such thing as a black “split to paint”.
I...
Sorry for the delay in response.
Clean the foot and use a disinfectant.
Soaking in Epson salts always seems to be helpful. Depending on how it looks, it might be worth it to try to splint the toe.
I recommend posting in the emergency section for more advice. With smaller chicks we have used a...
