Thelma and Louise Roost in Boise!
Update 7/23/10: Louise turned out to be a Louie and started crowing in the middle of the city so rehomed him along with Thelma - who was too flighty and always wanting to jump the fence. Replaced them with 2 Barred Rocks and I absolutely love these birds...
Me too! I have 4 (haven't updated my signature). I am thinking of getting a couple more, even tho it's over the Boise limit of 3. But, my neighbors are fine with it since they get the bonus eggs. My 2 older ones (around 7 mos) just starting laying. I didn't think they were until I found their...
I put dog hair from my furminator out in spring and wild birds take it all away in a couple hours to build their nests. Thought it would provide a nice cozy material on top of the hay of my chicken nest boxes? Any reason not to? Thanks!
are they safe to eat? Just have been out there awhile and I didn't know it. I was looking in their nest boxes, but they chose to lay where I store the hay. What a bonanza! My first go at this so want to be sure they are ok to eat! Thanks
I am so glad I found this thread as I, too, was considering putting my girl down today. I have just started treatment, but think I accidentally got some epsom flush down her airway. It's been a few hours and she still seems fine, but right afterwards I could her some gurgling in her chest. I...
Hello, I have a 6 month old Barred Rock and she suddenly went lame, then got better then lame again only a couple weeks later, this time worse. She can't stand up or walk although she can flap her wings from a seated position. She doesn't seem to have any control over her feet and legs. She...

I have 2 four month old barred rocks and am loving them. Want to get a third chicken and the same farmer I got the BRs from has barnevelders about the same age. Would like to try another breed and she says they are about equal to the BR as far as being docile, laying, broodiness. My biggest...
The verdict is in - roo. Got a full blown attempt at a crow the other morning. A local chicken farmer took him and I replaced him with a Barred Rock pullet, which I LOVE! Never knew a chicken could be so docile. Thanks again for all your help and feedback. As I've learned this is not an...
A PS... Regardless of whether Louise is a Louise or a Louie, my "guard" dog, who won't let another being on the property, and who mothered the chicks like pups since I got them, still watches over her brood! I don't worry much about predators as she's always watching over! Thought you'd get a...
Thanks for your help, everyone! I am such a novice, I just figured out what rose comb meant (thought it meant color!!). Hence my confusion in seeing some with and some without a larger comb. Nice to have you all out here to help a newbie like me! Looks like it's a waiting game and I will...
That's what I figured, thanks for the help! So, do RIWs get a comb or don't get a comb or can it go both ways? The only pics I could find are with no comb that you could really see - at least, like Louie here. Thanks again!
I couldn't see any pin feathers, but then again, not sure what' I'm looking for. Here is a closeup of his/her head and a side view. Couldn't get a close up of tail, do you need side view or from straight behind? Thanks so much for the help, you all are awesome!
My other question is: can RIW...
I'm really hoping so, but the page on RIW on this website has me worried, they are showing RIW with no comb at all. https://www.backyardchickens.com/breeds/rhode_island_white/10529
Also, this page:

There is not much out there about RIW, supposedly...
