I posted earlier and was given some great info, but I still have a few more questions that may sound silly, but here it goes. 1. I was told that I should get duckling crumble, will the baby on it's own start eating it or do I have to keep putting it by the dish, I also haven't seen it take any... -

how old is old......
could someone tell me what the average life span of a hen could be...give or take is fine. I have 7 ladies and just wondering. could there be an other reason for soft shelled eggs?
the fruit they get is min. about once a week a small amount divivded between seven hens. Also they have free access to oster shell, so I don't think that is the problem.- Elly

nasty male duck....

what could have happened to the duckling?
I came home from work tonight and just spent the last hour looking for a missing duckling. It was born two days ago. The momma duck and baby have been in the barn and before I left for work I had put the other female and male duck in the barn also as I don't get home till late and it was going... -

Thanks so much kittymomma !!! I was so worried. She only had that one broken egg shell by her nest and there no other eggs in it I guess it will be an only child !!! Can they go outside or should I keep them inside. I do have cats and worry about the baby getting caught by one of them.- Elly

I was given six ducks and a male...taken in or else they would have been killed. I never had ducks and know very little about them and didn't want babies so was trying hard to not let a female sit on her eggs to hatch them...well guess what this morning coming into the barn there is a baby... -

egg sitting...
yes, they must be muscovies. The drake is rather nasty also....hisses and bobs his head when ever I walk toward the barn. He does bite/nip if he gets the chance. Is he only like this because the hen is sitting on the eggs or are all drakes this protective of their girls? -

poisoned goat.....
One of my goats got into my rubabrb patch, I removed him right away,but I do know he got some mouth fulls of the leaves which are poisonous.
