probably 90% of people dont give their chickens oyster shells. obviously 130% of people on here do, and will probably deny the 90% thing, but it is by no means a requirement. they get plenty of calcium in layer feed. its like someone taking a multivitamin daily vs someone who doesnt. it wont...
obviously she wasnt asking about that "cockerel" she probably said 3 times that that is the HEN and mother of the younger bird. c'mon folks, get the reading glasses out.
i agree to the side by side route. i do that these days and never have any problems anymore. the BEST way to go is have a broody hatch your chicks and they'll be accepted by the flock pretty much on day one. nothing better than a week old chick running around doin whatever it wants in a flock...
the pecking order isnt a "phase" its a lifestyle for these critters. one will give in and one will take over, its natural. EXCEPT when theres no where to run. thats when birds are pecked to death. Its a hard lesson to learn, and i know it from experience. always give them somewhere to run to!
quick story - Dominique hen snuck in somewhere she wasnt supposed to be and laid a clutch of eggs. nothing to make a nest, just hard wood boxes... 1 chick hatched, she was the fiercest mother ive ever seen, even killed a half grown ameraucana that came in between the mother/chick. she suddenly...
...like saying that just because I ate your sandwich lying on the counter this afternoon, that means it was me that ate your hamburger yesterday... *shrug* if you really want to deter them put in a tomato garden.... perferably with the largest assortment of expensive heirloom tomatoes you can...
In my opinion, it'll be a lil while longer for your bird. that comb is still very small for a leghorn. let that baby get a lil floppy and then start asking! ha
i put out chick feed for the chicks, the hens eat it, layer for the old gals, the chicks eat it.... chickens eat anything...... and they always grow just fine.... "my kid eats off the adult menu, will it kill him?" no
all the chickens ive ever had were afraid of me until they got big and smart and remembered that i was the guy bringin the food.... so like everyone else says, treats.
If theyre not used to you feeding them bugs, which it sounds like they arent, theyre probably freaked out by you making the "throw the insect in the run motion" and arent comfortable to peck and look for bugs..... theyll get used to it eventually... or maybe try to do it more covertly...
I'm feeling the broody pains myself... all 4 of my duck hens... ameraucana just hatched a baby, and my dominique just hatched one... not a big first hatch for either hen but its something... the dominique snuck in my chick pen, laid her clutch, and started setting.. i figured what could be the...
in the hot months my chickens like to dig down into a little hole, i imagine the cool dirt cools em off quite a bit... a little different than a dustbath... we call the dustbathing area of the yard the "chicken dayspa".... ha, 8 hens dustbathing at once side by side is quite a sight....
Im sure it'll be the same as having a large, disgruntled duck. It will do its thing and your chickens will do their thing. If you have a large run attached to your coop as i do, and you leave the gate open letting them roam your property every day, like i do, then the goose will more than...
ive always wondered the same... or, when switching Roo's or segregating a pair of birds, how long does it take to ensure the new rooster is the fertilizer?
